At Last, The Finals

Hello bloggees and bloggettes!

Before beginning, I would like to again mention that we are having, for the next 4 Sundays, July 5th – July 26, a series of Best of the UMC showcases. It’s gonna be great. Click here for details.

And, now, finally, the Winner of the Ultimate Music Challenge is…

Rolling the Stones.

Congratulations you 20-thousand-dollar-having sumbitches!

Spend it wisely, or, go on a bender and blow it all in two days – either way, you earned it!

And just like that, it’s over.

I feel like a kid on Christmas day, after he’s opened all his presents, sitting around the tree looking at all the pieces of gift wrapping, shredded and scattered on the living room floor like, not to mix metaphors, dead soldiers after a great battle.

That’s how it feels for me today, Christmas has come and gone and I never wanted it to end. Before the show started, Alicia kept saying how nervous she was. “Why are you nervous?” I asked, and she said she was nervous “for the bands,” which I didn’t understand, until a few minutes before Don’t Stop Believing (DSB) came on and then I got nervous too, for the bands, and understood completely what she meant.

I was also nervous for myself because I knew it would be a hard night of judging and didn’t want to make any mistakes. 32 thousand dollars was on the line and I prayed it would be disbursed correctly, which, without the slightest doubt, I believe it was.

Don't Stop Believing

Don't Stop Believing

Rolling the Stones deserved that win. The judges (and the crowd) agreed. RTS was the clear winner, with Monsters of Rock in second, clearly, and the last two – Siren’s Crush and Don’t Stop Believing neck and neck for 3rd and 4th. The last two spots were the hardest to decide.

Here’s the funny thing.

Before going to the show, my wife, some friends and I had dinner at D.Z. Akins. During the meal, we had a discussion about whom we thought would win and the consensus was, DSB and Siren’s Crush would fight over the first and second slots and RTS and MOR– based on their weaker Semi-finals performances – would battle over the last two positions.

I agreed with them but also added that I would not be surprised if RTS and MOR stepped it up because there was no way either of those bands was going to allow themselves to perform poorly – and when I say poorly, I mean relatively poorly – two weeks in a row.

DSB rocks!

DSB rocks!

From the moment “Mick” came bounding onto that stage, until their full-band, theater-bow at the end, it was pure rock and roll delight. I told “Mick” after the show, “I will never tire of that moment when you come out onto the stage for the first time and throw your hands in the air to the cheers of the audience – it is such a Jagger moment, and you have it nailed.”

The set list was to die for. They opened with “Brown Sugar,” which was a great, set-launching choice, followed by the spine tingling “Gimme Shelter” (featuring Sherr’s oh so magical co-vocals), then “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” with that awesome percussion jam at the end, and “Keith” nailing Keith’s guitar parts on tone, style and spacing. That was the shit! Or so I thought, until they started playing “Sympathy for the Devil,” and realized that was the shit and the previous shit was just a bit of flatulence in comparison.

What a chill-spilling performance, what with Mick gliding back and forth on the stage while the girls sang “ooh-ooh” over and over again, and sounding more like a wind instrument (flute perhaps?) than vocals, and “Keith” again, nailing that gorgeous “Sympathy” slop-solo that just spills out of the PA like an upturned bottle of KickAss.

Jumping Jack Flash was an excellent choice for the finale. It’s a song everybody knows, but hasn’t been stripped of its soul the way “Satisfaction” has been. “Jumping Jack Flash” is the kind of tune that carries itself and all RTS had to do was show it the way home, which they most certainly did.

In short, an astounding set, astounding songs. My only complaint, and it’s a minor one, was repeating the Charlie Swatts’ “Hello” gag. It was funny the first time, pointless the second.

MOR was a five-man wrecking crew. I thought their song selection was weak-ish in the semis, but last night’s repertoire was exactly what it needed to be. They started with the heavy metal classic, Deep Purple’s “Highway Star,” which, by the way, was the first song MOR  played at their very first Ultimate Music Challenge appearance, last year, during UMC2.

It was, for me, a top-ten UMC memory. I remember when they started playing it, my first thought was, “There is no way they are gonna do this masterpiece any justice. There is no way those guitar players – who both look like they teach Nerd Workshops in their spare time – are going to pull of the shredding stylings of Ritchie Blackmore. There is no way this singer, who looks like a cross between a post-pubescent Opie Griffith and Dennis the Menace – was going to pull off Ian Gillian.”

But pull it off they did, and I rose from my seat when Ron nailed that signature Gillian shriek and I’ve been standing for MOR ever since.

After revisiting “Highway Star,” Monsters did not look back. They chased it with the Cult’s, “Love Removal Machine,” followed by Judas Priest’s angry, anthemic, “You’ve Got Another Thing Coming,”  the Who’s “The Real Me,” Queensryche’s “Queen of the Ryche,” and finally, Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper,” during which came the theatrical highlight of the night, and one of the top five memorable moments of the UMC – the beheading of Dave Patrone.

That was too funny. Dave himself didn’t realize whom they were executing right away, but when he did – well, he was a good sport about it. Props to Monsters for bringing something new and interesting to the game. Nice touch, also, with the balloons (balloons always makes metal music better), and Eddie the zombie mascot (of whom I never tire) and some extra random creepies, including the executioner, Bruce (a.k.a. Alice), who was kind enough to let MOR use his guillotine (heavy metal always sounds better when there’s a beheading involved) and basically closed their set – and the night – with a thunderous bang.

It was so great; hard to find something to criticize. If I had to pinpoint a reason that MOR lost to RTS, I would say, it came down to – yes, I’m going to use the word – dynamics. In this case, dynamics as it applies to tempo. Rolling the Stones won the tempo dynamics game by bringing us up and down and all over the place, whereas MOR pretty much kept us up, up and more up. Of course, they do “up” so well, so gracefully, that it’s not totally a bad thing, but when you lay the two performances side by side, it was tempodynamics that made the difference.

Siren’s Crush was spectacular as well. I absolutely love this band. Sadly, it was the weakest of their three performances, for two reasons. The first song (which I did not know) stayed in its pocket, which is a problem, especially for an intro, which, you know, really needs to jump out at you.

contraposto siren's - like greek statues

contraposto siren's - like greek statues

After that, they did “Piece of My Heart”, which some think was a bad choice. I disagree. I thought they knocked the original version into the dirt, kicked its ass repeatedly, then propped its lifeless body and did a tribal slamdance around it. I’m saying it was awesome.

The Alicia Keys song was brung as well. And while I know many did not appreciate, what I call, “The Costume Change Jam,” I, for one, loved it. It was straight-up funkalicous. Nevermind the talkboxing, which, no matter how you slice talkboxes, are tres cool. And I loved how he paid homage to Peter Frampton’s infamous Talkbox solo  (“Do you feel, like we do?”) before going into “California.”

Others were not as impressed. At one point, Alicia asked if maybe the jam was going on too long (an opinion held by many). “Not if it ends right now,” I responded and, as if on cue, it ended right then. It was perfect. It showcased the boys for once, without peer through a giant wall of estrogen.

When the girls returned to the stage – in new costumes – and started rocking out to Evanesence; well, that was theatrically dynamic! Only one problem. . .  “Wake Me Up Inside” was sloppy; probably, their sloppiest song of all three performances.

Finally they played “Free your Mind” and killed it; I mean really killed it. The harmonies couldn’t have been more juicy. I was pleased that they had  rebounded so well. Still, rebounding was not good enough. There is no room for mistakes in the finals. There’s just too much talent running around that even the tiniest blunders are magnified. It’s like a game between two chess masters. They are both excellent and it rarely comes down to who is the better player, rather, who makes the first mistake.

That said, let’s keep these mistakes in perspective. Mistakes may be magnified on finals night, but in the real world, at a regular gig, nobody would’ve batted an eye at “Wake Me Up,” because Siren’s are magnificent in so many ways.

Ditto DSB. They are a fabulous band. And I really thought, coming in, that they were going to take first or second place. And the reason they took last place was “Highway to Hell.”

Now, I am not of the opinion that it was wrong for a Journey tribute band to play AC/DC. I had no problem with that whatsoever. In fact, when the first guitar part kicked in, I howled with appreciation. Yes, it was a risk, but I appreciate the risk takers of the world. I appreciated that they were trying to mix it up, trying to poke their heads out of the box for a moment. I get that. I’m down. Kudos for trying.

No, the problem was not song choice, rather, the execution of the song. And it all came down to vocals. The bass player’s falsettos just seemed false, forced. When compared to the fluid, graceful falsettos of singer Juan, the AC/DC vocals stood out like a sore thumb. And the first chorus harmonies were way off. The second chorus was better, and the second half lead vocals improved, but by then the song was lost and the set mortally wounded.

Another issue with DSB was song selection. With the exception of “Oh Sherrie,” (awesome rendition by the way) and “Highway to Hell,” they repeated 4 songs. This was a mistake, especially considering the size of Journey’s catalog. Repeating that many songs risked boring the judges, or, at least, removing the element of surprise. Maybe that’s what the AC/DC was for. Still, the repeats didn’t help their cause.

That said, they were, and are, an awesomely talented band. Juan has an unbelievable voice. And the drummer? Jesus he was good. Come to think of it, all the drummers last night were spankin’. It truly was The Night of the Drummers. I bow to thee all.

Anyway, what a night. My only regret is that it’s over. These bands are all so good.

I won’t say anything hokey like, “You were all winners last night,” but I will say that you four are in the top of your class, and that each of you are going to earn a lot of money, fans and friends just by going out there and doing what you do; so keep doing it, purty please.

I would also like to add how impressed I am with the sound and light crew; the job you did last night, and throughout, makes the DreamCatcher one of the best live venues in the county. I currently don’t know of any that tops it.

To the bar staff and security – much love for you guys. I know how hard it is to do what you do, and I know you all busted your asses last night. I’m sure I’ll be seeing you soon.

To JackFM, the MC’s and other staff. Well done getting the word out! Keep up the good work!

To Casey, Tony, and the rest of Viejas management, and the kumeyaay tribe. Thank you for having me on board for this event. It’s really something and I am privileged and proud to be a part of it.

To the other judges, Alicia and Dave. It was inspirational working with you. I have learned so much from your musical expertise and powers of observation. You are savants in my opinion, and it’s an honor to have sat by your side.

Thanks also, to the audience, who made this event possible. Thanks for your cheers and your jeers. Thanks to all the new friends I’ve made, and old friends who came down. Thanks even to the young lady who gave me the finger when I was on stage last night, yeah, even you lady, thanks, because people like you – the sourpusses and negative Nellies of UMC – you make me laugh with your tantrums and your crybaby faces. Please don’t ever stop.

And last but not least, to the bloggers. Thanks for coming in here. Thanks for posting your opinions and encouraging debate. It has been a blast. No reason to stop either. Keep ‘em coming people. You know I love you.

The King has spoken.

  1. What a show! and not just the finals but the entire run starting with week one. For some, like the negative chick, they only saw the shows featuring their band. They missed out on the soap opera type drama the entire UMC experience has… including this blog. The antics MOR pulled off on the last song had some inside baseball that the casual observer missed out on.

Some quick observations. Juan’s voice seemed weaker than the semis. As far as DSB doing Highway to Hell, A tribute band is only obligated to the tribute when they are hired under that premise. Here at the UMC you are only obligated to play covers so no foul there. Good idea to mix it up, too bad their rendition kinda sucked.

MOR chopping off Patrone’s head was too funny! I believe it was inspired by Al’s bounty on Dave’s hat to they dropped the hat (head and all) ha ha! It reminded me of those Seinfeld episodes where they are producing a Seinfeld show within the Seinfeld show. The stripped hat was perfect as it was so un-Patrone it accentuated the parody.

    • I agree Dave, I wish there was a way to let people now how great the show is, in its entirety – the drama, the personalities, the friendship that are forged (or destroyed). It just doesn’t get any better than this!

  2. Although I don’t agree with everything Ed said, I do believe that the bands won in the right order according to their performances that night. Every band was great. I got goose bumps several times and I typically don’t enjoy most live performances that much. I, unlike Alicia or Ed, don’t jump up at the table screaming and clapping when something cool happens. I just like to drink it in. I’m not cool or anything, just lazy I guess.

I spoke with each band about their performances individually last night and told them what I thought they did well and what missed.

I don’t usually comment on the performances for two reasons, one we normally do it at the show and two, Ed always steals all of my notes so I don’t like to be inaccurate; however,

I don’t agree with Ed that the AC/DC tune was a mistake by DSB. Although the second lead singer’s vocals had minor issue on the first phrase or two, I though his performance was excellently done and his singing was very authentic to me. I really dug it. Juan on the other hand sounded a little tired in places and it felt as though he was squeezing the notes in several parts of the performance. Don’t get me wrong, He’s an amazing vocalist and he hit some clean and amazing notes and his energy on stage is infectious, though a little on the Fosse side for my taste. Faithfully was a great idea although they thought we weren’t diggin’ the ballads. I’m going over the way the guitarist plays that triplet riff in Don’t Stop Believin’ cause I always thought the accent is on the one of the triplet and Alicia says it was perfect. It wasn’t an issue, just something I wondered about. At times Juan’s falsetto sounded contrived but I’ve never heard that in prior performances. That being said, they could have taken third with slightly higher applause.

I considered Siren’s Crush to be the favorite to win and unfortunately they did not pull out the kind of performance we’ve seen them do in the past. They came out strong, the dancing and outfits were as sexy as I’ve seen them. The drummer blew me away last night and Janis has never been covered by a sweeter voice. The harmonies were great but individually there were some pitch issues. I think there were two performance mistakes they made in the middle that cost them. One, they should not have announced they were leaving the stage. They should have just gone off and did the change and let the band do their thing. That way we would have been anxiously awaiting their return and not noticed that the jam was so long. The Jam was damn cool; however, it was longer than I would have liked. Then the Evanescence tune came on and it was jumbled and pitchy and I don’t feel like they ever really recovered from that. I loved their set; but it just didn’t shine like I expected it to.

Monsters of Rock came out with a great tune that was technical and well known without being overplayed. The unison Blackmore riff was a little questionable but they pulled it off for sure. I felt like the set got boring by song 3 and I was putting them in 3rd on my way to 4th when something happened and they picked it up and really started to rock. Assassinating me was a calculated risk; but, I think it really showed some balls, even if that guy does need a new hat. The fact that that guy, (Dean, I think?) went around trying to figure out how to impersonate me shows a dedication to authenticity and he’s the first official David Patrone Tribute Band even though he didn’t sing. I’m not a big fan of the US Military Tribute thing. I think it’s overdone. If you want to support us, just get the hell out of our way and let us get the job done, PERIOD. When we come back make sure we get dental and medical and call it even. Regardless, The Trooper is a bad ass tune that rocked and the final dual dragon guitars and unison riffs were spot on. Alice (Bruce) and the beheading of my impersonator sealed them a spot in the annals of the UMC. I think anyone who impersonates me should be relieved of the burden of their collective cabesim anyway  JK I dug it and didn’t think it was distasteful or wrong in any way.

Rolling The Stones delivered their best performance yet. These guys just seem to keep getting better. There is an amazing juxtaposition between the performers on that stage that has been gleaned from the original; the frenetic gyrations of Mick with the Heroin tamped demeanor of Keith and Bill and the distracted insouciance of Charlie. I loved it. Mick Jagged came out from the get-go with an energy and movement that just fully captured my attention. Sherr’s performance was soulful and heartfelt and I just felt like they couldn’t have given a better performance. Of course there were little jiggles but they really only served to add to the character of the performance.

At the end of the night was feeling sick to my stomach up there on stage to award fourth place. I’ve come to really dig the musicians in these bands on a personal level and I did not want to disappoint them or their fans. I applaud all of you, your performances have been amazing and you all deserve the tremendous success you will inevitably get in your careers. Awesome!

    • I agree much of what Dave said, except about the AC/DC song, and also, his little tirade about not honoring our troops.

Sorry to say man, I think it’s great when a band does that. So long as they don’t overdo it, which Monsters did not do.

Bottom line, many of us appreciate the sacrifice the men and women of the military make for us, and it’s perfectly reasonable to express that feeling in a work of art, this case, a live rock performance.

Besides, Patroney, Dear, you don’t get to say how we choose to pay our respects.

As the saying goes, “If I love you, what business is that of yours?”

    • MOR’s tribute to the troops was just right! I have to agree with Ed (ow! ow!) that we can express our appreciation any way we wish, with or without you approval! At least we finallly “get it” that regardless of how you feel about the fighting appreciation should be expressed! We should have done that with the Vietman War vets too.
      ~~Peace!

  3. Wow, what a night, i think the crowd was as loud as a jet engine, in fact i know they were! i want to thank my band mates, its Sherr not Sherri, Ed, who rose to the occasion just like i knew they would. we had these sets planned out 2 months ago, and 2 weeks before the semi’s they all wanted to switch them, as in let’s do the big set in the semi-finals to insure we get to the finals. i said no, way no, no way. we had a tough night in the semi’s, everybody has had them and we got it out of the way then, thank you very much. i got very little sleep last night and i am stupid today, and i didn’t even have any Rumplemintz Tom. i feel like the kid after Christmas too Ed, but all i see are the toys i unwrapped. After thanking the other stones again, you guys kill me, i would first like to thank the judges for their good taste, sharp ears, and obvious sense of style, lavish praise? heck yes. also would love to give some shouts of gratitude to the crew, first of which is Rick, the stage manager, what a professional, he and his guys are the best in town, Casey works his butt off too, and i know he relies on those chaps to get the job done. After that, i gotta tell ya, when MOR started Highway Star, i said fuck it, and bulled my way up to the front, much to Sergio and Ron’s surprise, then when they started ripping ‘The real Me’, well let’s just say i can’t talk today, you gentlemen rock the earth, probably took it off it’s axis a bit, damn. what an experience, we came in to this a new band, with no shows under our belt, and we are pro’s but everybody has to gel, i think we saw that has happened. we got meet and network with San Diego’s finest musicians, all of whom were so gracious and genuine towards us, we just fell in love with the good folks that rock this town and roll their way through the music scene. i scored some great new friends, although it was our old friends, and our fans who really made this all possible. they came out in droves to see and support us, and for that we cannot thank you enough, you people lifted us up to win this contest. Alecia, Davis, and Ed, i sure hope to see you around, if you play out, I’m comin to the show, Ed, i will be reading your stuff, you three were one of the best parts of the show, a novella could be written about your varied personalities and the spice you brought to this whole show. i was not happy with our semifinal win and to win as we did last night, assuming here based on Ed’s comment but lack of score numbers, with the points and the crowd, gives me a ’satisfaction’ that will last a long time. it makes me more than ‘happy’ and glad that i did not get ’shattered’ by anything less than what seemed like a dream set from start ‘me up’ to finish. the opportunities that have resulted, and will result from our competing are almost overwhelming all ready and we will always remember and treasure this experience. i will also be attending next year to enjoy the process and would love to fill in if David or Ed have to be out of town for some reason. especially since, i believe the winner cannot enter next year, right? like i would, my guts had enough this year. Congratulations to Monsters of Rock, we love you guys, Sirens Crush, who are so damn good musically it hurts, and the three bombshells who have a deal with the devil (or is it Sympathy) when it comes to harmony. and Don’t stop Believin who we got to know over the last few weeks and they are so cool. i don’t care if they’re from friggin Milwaukee, they were super guys with great pro attitudes and fun to hang with. i hope to see a lot of our fellow performers around town, and play some shows with some of you too, remember..

“It’s good to be here…….. it’s good to be anywhere”, Jackson

    • Thanks Jackson, however, as I told you last night, no need to thank us – I would just as easily thrown you guys under the bus had you sucked.

Instead, thank yourself, and your band, and your fans. We were just doing our job.

It was a pleasure meeting you homey. I will definitely be coming to your shows in the future, including your Best of UMC outing on July 19 where I will be expecting to collect that drink you owe me, and about 800 other people.

      Haha!

20K doesn’t last all that long when you’re buying.

  4. Ed, David, Alicia, You guys did a more than fair assessment of the competition and I do believe that is the popular opinion. I would like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU on behalf of myself and SC for your wisdom and kind words as well as constructive critisisim. You three had a difficult job but handled it like the respected pros you are. You should not feel bad for having to make such tough decisions. I am proud to have had the opportunity to be judged by you three because you did it right! Also, it would be an outright crime not to mention what a privilage is was to have been on the same bill with RTS, MOR and DSB!! You all FUCKING ROCKED!!

KUDOS TO ALL STAFF,CREW AND BANDS INVOLVED IN THIS 1ST RATE PRODUCTION!!! (Do I have anything brown on my nose yet?? Ah, Wldn’t care if I did.)

    Can I get a witness???

    • James, you guys are monsters. I am forever touched by having witnessed your skills and passion. I will definitely be coming out to your shows as well. Put me on your list, k?

      • Man we’d be honored to see you and hang out at any show. There’s never a list, only family and “family” is open to anyone with a willingness to be yourself and have good time.
We’ll be looking out for you Ed and anyone who wants to join in on the positivity!! Just make sure you give us a nudge and introduce yourself to us “snobs” if we don’t already know you. ;) BTW if we don’t already have your (bands, judges, fans, the curious) contact info please drop us a line at the myspace address so we can all stay in touch. I’d especially like to keep contact with ALL the bands/musicians who participated from week 1 to the finals. We didn’t get to meet most of you. If nothing else, it would be a great way for us all to network and support each other/ recommend each other for specific entertainment needs.

        Peace Ed/ Everybody!!

      • James, I think you misunderstood. By list, I meant your mailing list, so that I would be notified of your upcoming shows. I wasn’t asking to be on a guest list or anything, I always pay cover to show support (unless your charging 50 bucks or something, in which case, list me bitches!)

Anyway, I will Myspace-up with you. And to all the bands who played in the competition, please find me on myspace and/or facebook and send me a friend request. I’ll be coming out to your shows too!

      • Yeah, my response reads kinda misunderstood on my part. There’s never a cover and yes we’ll put you on the list. In fact, Ed…not only can I do dat, I…I…I………yes, I will do dat.

  5. Hey Ed ….I want a recount!!!!!….You missed MOR rocking Love Removal Machine by The Cult….on your recap….STAR

    • Oh, I’ve got your recount STAR, shall I bring it to you in person?

      LOL

I don’t know how that happened. The song was included in my original edit, but in my hungover, blazey-eyed state, somehow edited it out. It’s fixed now, as well as Sherr’s name, which I also had spelled correctly in the original edit.

      Blame it on the Rumplemintz!

  6. I wanted to also thank Viejas Casino and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians. i do have one suggestion for the powers that be as far as the UMC goes, i thought it would be greatly appreciated by the competeing bands to even out the finals money prizes, perhaps $20k for first, $10k for second, $5k for third and $2.5k for fourth place, that way all the bands who do make it to finals get something that you can’t sneeze at. it also rewards everyone for making it that far, just a though, which is easy for me to do since it’s their hard earned money and not mine. by the way Ed, Charlie says hello to you, with love.

  7. big fat kudos to all the bands… wow, what talent. fun, fun, fun, can’t wait until next year. thank you to Viejas and Jack FM for sponsoring this great event. PLEASE update us as to the July Sundays with the returning bands… would love to see the upsets and the bands that came in 2nd/3rd, the whole “luck of the draw” thing in that some bands should have made it to the semis that didn’t. Would love to see the “wild card/s” in play next year. All in all a fantastic production by all… judges, staff, crew, bands………… mmmmuah!

  8. I also wanted to comment on “Tribute Bands” vs the “Cover Bands”. Last night was the perfect example of a battle of 2 very different “types” of bands. First off let me say I am huge MOR fan and have been so for several years. I wanted them to win. Last night I did think the best “Tribute Band” won but the best “Cover Band” lost.

Bands like Rolling the Stone are so great..because they get pretty much every detail of “being” the Stones down in their act. Not to say that their music is not as good as any other band…but you kind of forget the little “flubs” they might make…because your head is wrapped up with them “visually” becoming the Stones.

MOR on the other hand…plays their music staight up (no frills)in your face Metal. In fact I know that doing the “gags” on stage is just really not their style …and if you ever see an MOR show outside of the UMC you would never see the “stick”. I prefer my music pretty much the way it went down from the original artists, MOR really does this well. They emulate and pay omage to great bands and musicians …but don’t try to “be” them.

I know tht MOR went to great lengths to listen to the judges on the type of set list they wanted to hear. I felt they did a great job with that. The set last night was one I have never heard before and I really felt it worked for the over all crowd. The band wanted to reach every one at the venue…not just the fans that know their metal roots well.

MOR’S stage show last night was weak at best….So next year…If they decide to go for round #3 ..I am going to offer my services to put on the stage production …All the MOR guys have to do is show up and play

I see it going down something like this….A flag waiving Eddie enters from stage left pulling busty blond chicks (lots of skin & leather)in cages tied up with chains…while the stage explodes with Pyrotechnics. Ron is dressed as Ozzie biting off a birds head…Gavin is in Kiss Makeup, Dave could be Nikki (sorry Dave he is a fav of mine, so you have to fill that fantasy…LOL) Tom is up in one of those drum kits that spin up in the air “a la Tommy Lee” and Sergio …now you know you are a multi tasking kind of guy on the guitar. I see you with long brown kinky hair in your eyes like Slash, with the school boy outfit on like Angus and playing a knock off of Billy Duffy’ white Falcon..

So there you have it judges….if you want a “show”…we will give you a show..anything to get that 1st place. Thanks for a great UMC this year.

    ROFLMAO…..STAR

    • MOS: The Guillotine, US Flag, Tribute to Troops, Be-heading Patrone, and of course, as always ‘Eddie” was great. And you even threw in the “Rock n Roll” beach ball type balloons for the fans to play with.
      Genius! That was a concert!
      Thanks. . .
My voice is still recovering from ‘trying’ to sing along to “Queen of the Ryyyyyyche” one of my favorite QR tunes.

      • Dave M. is right, as usual. Comparing tribute vs. cover IS roses vs. flowers.

In the future, if you should dare to bring this discussion up again, you should say “tribute bands” versus “generic” or “variety” or “top 40″ cover bands.

Now, since I made no such commitment to let this discussion rest, I’m happy to climb up to the tallest building on the net and holler at the top of my lungs…

        THE JUDGES ARE NOT MORONS!

We recognize a good performance and we recognize a bad performance. There is no amount of costuming that will change that. Monsters did not lose cuz they did not mimic some other band, or have costumes and whatnot. They lost because of musical reasons.

Continuing to use this apples and oranges metaphor drives me nuts because EVERYTHING is apples and oranges. Even if the contest was, tribute band only, or “variety” cover band only, we would still have to grade against different genres. Then you’d be screaming, “Hey man, this contest should be a hard rock tribute band contest only.”

But then, what if Band A. Has a piano, and Band B. does not. I imagine then you’d be saying, “This needs to be a 4 piece, hard rock, no-piano tribute band contest only.”

        Bah!

Look at America’s Got Talent. They judge musicians against ventriloquists against mimes! If David Hasselhoff can do that, we can certainly judge tribute versus variety cover bands.

        The King Has Spoken

    • Tribute bands vs. Cover bands is like saying Roses vs. Flowers… now excuse me while I get back to beating this dead horse.

      • Tribute vs. Cover… it just won’t go away! There IS A DIFFERENCE… but oh yeah… I forgot…. I’m done with that discussion!!

    • We would have used pyrotechnics had they allowed it.

    • STAR… When you prepare that MOR stage show, tell Sergio or Tom to let me know! I will be there to see that!! :-) Sergio with long brown kinky hair…mmmmm the vision!! And Tom banging the skins while spinning! WoW!

  9. Hey all, some quick announcements…

First, for those of you have already read the blog, you may have missed out on the photos I posted. Last night we had some pro shots taken, and they look fantastic. Go back and scroll through the post if you want to check them out.

Secondly, The Best of UMC Schedule is posted. Click here for details.

Seriously, you should come. It’s gonna be great!

  10. I have so much to say, but so little time right now (work really interfers with my life!). But wanted to offer my congrats to RTS for your win. You didn’t win on my list, but for you, it’s the judges that count. I just wish there could have been a four way tie for first place.
    More later….
    ~~Peace!

    • Colleen,
you deserve 1st place for best, most committed UMC fan.
It’s been a pleasure enjoying and sharing with you over the best of the best.
Thanks for the Tres Generations, as well!!
And thanks to our servers, Cheryl and Desi- you ROCK!!

      • Thanks Rick! It’s good to see the recognition of sticking with the blog since Round 1 of UMC 2 all the way to the end of UMC 3. The blog got pretty slow in the winter time.

But now that I think of it… “committed”….. I hope you didn’t mean that I should be committed! Although to stick with this for so long, perhaps I do need some psychological help!! :-)

It was also my pleasure to meet you and Vito. You boys are quite a riot! Glad you were able to see the truth about the judges. Hope to see you around… perhaps at a MOR gig!

  11. BEST OF UMC UPDATE!:

That 70’s Rock Show will take the last slot of the Best of the UMC, on July 26

  12. If you go to the “about the bands” page, I have added the Showcase series so you can see the band lineups for the next four weeks.

    http://ultimatemusicchallenge3.wordpress.com/about-the-bands/

    Enjoy!

  13. Looks like Geezers won after all! Congrats, you guys. See you on July 5th at the Best of UMC!

  14. sure like to see those scores and noise meter readings Ed, any chance? it was the finals after all, Jackson. PS see you at viejas the 19th, with MOR and 619 on the bill too.

  15. Sorry for the laundry list, but I have many to thank. Evette (my lover), Bruce (our executioner), Curtis (Eddie #1), Phil (Eddie #2), Dale (Patrone Impersonator), Brain Moore (Illusion Guitars), Jessy, Whitney and Nicole (Eddie’s dancing escorts), MOR, the 39 other bands, Viejas, JackFM, judges, production crew, friends, family, fans and supporters. I hope I didn’t leave anyone out.

I’m proud of the band and what we were able to accomplish. We’re not always consistent, but the boys sure gave it hell for the final. Some bands have a musical director, but this band pretty much has five, so that paired with trying to get into the judges heads is quite a stressful ordeal. It’s great that it paid off in the end. The recession has hit the band pretty hard, so the prize money will go to good use.

I was totally amazed at the crowd support that turned out for the show. The DreamCatcher is a top notch venue and the caliber of musicians we shared the stage with was awesome.

Ed, now that we are “allowed to be friends” I’m sure that we will be for years to come. Alicia, I don’t imagine we’ll cross paths too often, but I hope we do. You’re a total sweetheart. Mr. Patrone, I didn’t really get to know you, but respect you even though it was my idea to chop your head clean off. I will come see you perform some day as well as Alicia.

I’ve seen and performed with quite a few tribute bands, but none better than Rolling the Stones. I could go on about all the bands, but I think it’s all been said already. I think DSB may have beaten us if they had expanded their set list with songs such as “Wheel in the Sky” or “Lights”. SC is in a class of their own.

As far as the “tempodynamics” I guess most of our material is high energy by choice. We had considered “Rock and Roll ain’t Noise Pollution” by AC/DC, but feared it might drag things down too much. I tried talking the guys into the Manilow tune, but they just wouldn’t go for it. For us going from classic rock to alternative rock to heavy metal is about as dynamic as we can do. I had no idea Ron was going to do the “US Military Tribute thing” but thought it was fitting given the theme and lyrics of “The Trooper”.

Here’s hoping that all the bands will support each other for the good of the San Diego music scene.

    Stay classy, San Diego

  16. Tom, I totally understand where you are coming from RE: tempodynamics. However, speaking for myself only, had you done “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution” in say the third slot, I would have had a much longer, more difficult inner dialogue about who to give first place.

Not that I want to torment you with coulda/shouldas, just to say that, in my mind, “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution” was EXACTLY what was missing from that set, tempodynamically speaking. Not to mention, lyrically, it makes perfect sense.

As for friendship, you don’t know this, but we’ve been friends for years in my head. We’ve already gone imaginarily fishing together, already imaginarily went to a concert together, have imaginarily doubled-dated with our lovely wives and one time we even went imaginarily sky diving! It was a virtual blast!

    LOL

For reals man, we’re hanging out. Oh, and by the way (here’s your chance to plug dude), when’s the upcoming SD shows? You’re playing at my bar aren’t you? 710?

“Heavy decibels are playing on my guitar
We got vibrations coming up from the floor
We’re just listening to the rock
    that’s giving too much noise
Are you deaf, you wanna hear some more?”

“Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution,”
    AC/DC

    • Well like I said, five musical directors. Sometimes you have to go with the majority or who barks the loudest. What can you do? These are exactly the kinds of issues that make us ask ourselves “we’re never going to do this again right”?

And now ladies and gentlemen, the plugs…

Speaking of great tribute bands, we are appearing at the Second Wind in Santee on 7/9/09 with Damage Inc., a kick ass Metallica tribute. I guess you might say we are appearing as MOM – Monsters of Maiden. We’ll be doing as many Maiden tunes as we can get together, maybe some Sabbath to fill in the rest.

Then 711/09 at Ed’s favorite watering hole the 710 Beach Club.
As mentioned we will be back at the DreamCatcher on 7/19/09 with Rolling the Stones and 619. There are plenty more gigs lined up which you can check out at http://monstersofrockband.com and click on “Upcoming Shows”. We have an email list, MySpace and Facebook, so choose your social networking weapon and I hope we’ve picked up some new fans along the way.

    • ED!
“However, speaking for myself only, had you done “Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution” in say the third slot, I would have had a much longer, more difficult inner dialogue about who to give first place”.
You just had to go and say that didn’t you!! Now not only will Ron have a big head, so will Sergio!! I will have to talk to Tom about posting that one!
See you on Wednesday @ the 710.

      • That last post was from me Ed! I forgot to change the user name.. :)

        Evette

      • Evette, Tom, I don’t mean to cause a brouhaha among the band, I understand fully how difficult it must be for all you guys to be sitting around the round table, arguing about what to play. All I’m saying is this…

“Rock ‘n’ roll ain’t noise pollution
Rock ‘n’ roll ain’t gonna die
Rock ‘n’ roll ain’t noise pollution
Rock ‘n’ roll it will survive”

        Nuff said.

  17. Keith/Jackson, (never know which to call you), I will post the decibel readings, but not the scores, cuz that’s a real time-sucker, and, there’s nothing there interesting enough to post. The judges were in complete agreement with each other, the crowd was in complete agreement with the judges, and the Gods of Rock and Roll smiled down on us all knowing that all was right and good in the UMC universe.

    DB readings to follow…

  18. WoW!!! How fun were the finals!?! It was a great night and although I am, and will always be, a true MOR fan… well, I found myself dancing and enjoying all of the performances.
MONSTERS, you guys KICKED it and I’m really proud of you. Up against three “casino” type shows and ROCKED IT! I obviously think you deserved first, but how are you gonna compete with the Stones?
I sooooo cracked up when Dave’s head came off – what fun! Very tasteful use of gore boys and perfectly metal :-)
I’m sad it is all over for another year… but I’ll be back on Sundays to see my favorites, what a great brainstorm guys!
    Love you all (especially Ed)!

  19. DB readings for UMC3 Finals:

    Rolling the Stones – 119.6

    Monsters of Rock – 117.3

    Siren’s Crush – 116.5

    Don’t Stop Believing – 116

I think this explains why the blog has been relatively slow this week. Cuz, it seems, nearly everybody is in agreement with the way things shook out. Even the bands seem to agree. And when there is no controversy, there is not much to complain about. And, well, let’s be honest, blogs by their nature are for complaining. Well, in general, anyway. It’s usually the controversial decisions that get the blog up around 200-300 comments, but I, for one, am loving the fact that it’s been a peaceful, friendly communication between us all. Of course, Colleen hasn’t yet chimed in with her grievances (apparently she has some), and not one angry DSB fan dropped by.

Even Al, who posted about the Finals on the previous blog, was only mildly insulting and offensive (and no, Al, that is not an invitation for you to come in here and start trouble), so all in all, I’d say all is right and good with the Gods of UMC.

    Wheee!

  20. A big Hell Yeah to RTS and MOR!!! It’s been cool becoming friends with you guys. Hope to play with yall again.

  21. Ed, I responded to your post above, but I guess you need to approve the link I included.

  22. ok…

My first reaction to DSB’s set was, haven’t we seen this show before? I LOVE the choice to break out of their tribute and do the AC/DC. They should have just went into it without the intro, same critique as Crush introducing the wardrobe break. It was a nice rendition but it lacked balls, I couldn’t hear the second guitar part and the bass player’s vocal style was a little flowery for my taste.

The Rolling the Stones story is a text book example of how to approach this contest. Jackson had a concept and built a strategy by attending almost every UMC show. If you go back a couple of weeks on the blog that dude from Stacy and the Package is still posting about how the simple people of UMC just aren’t sophisticated enough to appreciate their nuanced performance. He’s one who doesn’t understand the premise of the contest and could have learned by attending more of the show before their night.

The only critique for the Stones, I would have liked to see the follow spot catch Mick as he pushed through the crowd. You can let the light guy know your plan. He might not remember but it’s not against the rules.

Crush was magnificent as alway! Love the picture above. Round one knocked me off my feet! the final round set wasn’t so spectacular. The Evanescence tune was pitchy right at the acappella breaks. :( The wardrobe break wasn’t too long rather it was too monotonous. Perhaps mixing it up with some solos, taking turns? or maybe a good time to do some silly theatrical gags ala chopping off heads?

Monsters of Rock! I appreciated the quick transitions between songs. The singing was right on! the Acappella ending to the Who was right on pitch too. I like hearing how you had a strategy and stuck to it. Way to Go!

Now I’m motivated to enter for next year!

Suggestions for improvement to the show? the room? the elimination process? I’ll be posting some, my favorite suggestion is to offer token awards at the finals to bands already eliminated. Like best chick band. Worst technical glitch, etc.

    more rantings later

  23. Yeah, I knew before any of the bands had played that night that the DB readings would end up looking like this, LOL! I was standing near the stage when the girl from Jack FM asked for cheers from the fans of each band and RTS was the loudest, then MOR, etc. It was a tell-tale sign for me at that point that we all had to bring it on as strong as we could. And I thought it would be a monumental task trying to top Don’t Stop Believin’ and Siren’s Crush. My hats off to the other 3 bands of this final round.

  24. Will you be posting any more pictures?

  25. I want to see some more pictures of the winning band! I saw a photographer there. Is there any way to get copies of any of the pics?

  26. Hello!

I had to rub that one in, Edwin. hehehehehe

What a tremendous experience. It’s a real life changer for me. Having the opportunity to meet and get to know some of San Diego’s finest musicians. It’s really humbling. Bands should start planning for next year’s competition NOW! No kidding.

Judges: you all made this fun and interesting. Good King Ed, you little old statistic spawner you, what a great time, eh? and 119.6? Whoa…DP: Sorry that you got the crap end of the stick when you had to announce 4th place. You all have to rotate next year! Alicia: You’re a smart cookie and seem most interesting. Bet we see you around someday, somewhere.

To fans of all the groups: The Postman really delivered. You all came out & broke some records. Yes! And of course, RTS fans, you guys are the best!!

Crew: Great job for an exceptionally event only times 11 weeks. Work with you all in the near future.

To Dave M: The light guy had a full chart with requests (so did soundman, Vince) and that was one of them, the follow spot on Mick that is. Oh well, we’ll try again July 19th. Say, I generally enjoy your takes. Rant on, pal!

I want to thank my unbelievable RTS family: Dave, Bob, Sherr, Justine – I’m at a loss for words. I am amazed at your abilities and your willingness to stretch them. Ronnie/Ozzie: sweet leads, especially Can’t You Hear. I believe that gives the tune it’s soul. Bernie/Bill: you da man. Some of the best bass lines recreated to a TEE! Keith/Jackson, those driving rhythms push me to want to play my best. But you knew that already. Mick/Mick (Ha!): Thank you for that fateful day that you walked into our lives. Onward, buddy.

So, one great event put on in superb style loaded with some of the most interesting people you’d meet anywhere. Thank you, Viejas.

My new Monsters friends: I’ll really enjoy getting to know you blokes and we’ll have plenty of fun along the way. You can just tell.

  27. I want to see more pictures of Monsters! :) :)

  28. Actually Dave M, the strategy was born of our brain trust, the whole band! Keith is not up on strategy, nor do i care, i am however a social butterfly and i was there because i love to mingle with the peoples. Mick is the real genius behind this group. I look forward to our show, july 19th, more MOR baby, and I will be up front again, screaming to hear AC/DC’s “If you want blood, you got it”, unless they really want to kill me happy with a kickin’ rendition of “Ace of Spades”, can Ron do Motorhead? i friggin bet he can! Sergio and Flash, they know tone. Sergio, can i have your SG?

  29. Well Ed! I guess it’s time to “chime in”! I have much to say, but my “says” are not necessarily “grievances”! Ed, you assume where you should not be assuming little grasshopper!

First off, I’d like to once again offer my highest congratulations to Rolling The Stones. I’ve never gotten the chance to witness a live Stones concert, but I think I’ve gotten close the three times I’ve gotten to see you perform. Although you were #4 of my picks for the night (ok… I’m waiting for the boos) you were #2 on my choice for all around entertainment! (Sorry… I’m a huge MOR fan!)

DON’T STOP BELIEVING: I loved your intro. I noticed you dialed down the volume level a bit this week, but it was still loud. Just not too loud, so the distortion was not there like in the semis. Watching the lead singer continually smiling through the entire set told me you were all proud to be there and were enjoying the audience as much as they you! Keyboard dude… your great transistions flowed from one song to the next so smoothly! Drummer dude… Simply AWESOME!!! Had a bit of a disappointment with “Highway To Hell”. Didn’t seem to fit. And finally…. Bass player dude… thanks for coming downstage for a change. It was good to see a bass player up front rather than back with the drummer all the time. Great Job DSB! You rocked!

ROLLING THE STONES: I felt your dynamics were still a bit flat (pausing for the boos) this week again. Better than the semis, but not the same energy as Round 1. I liked the idea of the intrumentals in the middle of the set, but agree with others that it went on a bit too long. Perhaps it works in a regular gig, but for this particular gig with only 30 minutes to show your stuff, it was a risk. (Apparently didn’t hurt you though) I loved your groups instrumental diversity. Even the girls got into playing instruments. Great audience interactions and great character impersonations! Great job RTS! You rocked!

SIRENS CRUSH: The first song was a bit over the top with being more shouted than sung. Your choregraphy was better this week. You had a few mis-steps again. You seemed to be confused with what to do with the big stage. I personally loved your instrumentals in mid set showcasing your sexy guys! But once again, I have to agree with previous posts that it was a bit too long. Loved your costumes! Sexy, but in good taste. Great job SC! You rocked!

MONSTERS OF ROCK: My notes say “more dancing”… I have NO idea what I meant by that! Maybe I was telling myself that I needed to do more dancing rather than screaming my approval from the nose bleed section!! Did you hear me??!?!? :-) You guys were AWESOME!!! I thought wow, when the beachballs came out, what a great idea! Little did I know what was yet to come! I kept wondering what the big thing on the stage was that was cloaked. My husband thought when it was placed on the stage during the set-up that Ron was going to emerge from it. It was so fun to watch you from upstairs, because I got to see it all. The beachballs, your band, your smiles, your fans going crazy on the PACKED dance floor! Great! You guys brought it! Ron… you ARE a superman! And how great was the idea to have “Alice” be the executioner? Brilliant! You were not overly loud… just loud enough! I wore my T-shirt proudly! Great job MOR! You rocked!

Dave M… I agree with your idea of token awards. My token award for the finals goes to the drummer for DSB. Your drumming got so fast it became a blur! AWESOME! And this comes from a drummer’s wife! (Tom… you know I love you though)

My FIRST PLACE PICK: My first place pick for the finals for UMC 3 goes to………. the tech guys! OMG! I got to sit behind you guys during the semis (and Wayne Newton show) and finals. Watching you was almost as entertaining as watching the bands! You guys put on a great show, showcasing each band with just the right lighting, lighting “pops” and sound mixes! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

To all the bands of UMC 3… I hope you enjoyed the experience as much as I did. I too mourn the “morning after Christmas” feeling. It all went by too quickly. I hope to catch as many Sunday shows as possible. I’m sure it will be fun.

To all my fellow bloggers… thanks for all your input. Evan you “Al”! And I really do understand! Perhaps someday you will realize that I do not hate men. In fact… they are my preference!

So there it is… my chiming in!

    ~~Peace!!!!

    • Alice (Bruce) as the executioner was the perfect twist ending to the entire UMC! Like discovering who shot JR! ha ha

    • Hey Colleen, I did not assume anything. You told me that you had a few issues with the way things shook out. You didn’t use the word “grievance” but, it was the implication, or perhaps the inference. Apologies if I misunderstood.

    • Colleen, you are by far “The master Chick” when it comes to knowing
Music! but i must say unless your a True Stones Fan some of what
they really Pulled Off might have been Lost? Note for Note the Instruments “Nailed It” every Lead, every Change! and if The Band did’nt
Thank their Backup Vocalists and “The Vocal Queen” of the night on
“Gimmie Shelter” for being “The Best Female Vocalist” the UMC has ever
seen, then they should, because she’s one of the biggest reason they Won.
In fact this years UMC had the Best Vocalists EVER. Every Band had Great
Vocalists!! As much as I love The Stones i wanted MOR to Win! maybe
because i’ve been able to pull off doing the stones in cover bands i’ve
been in but never the artists MOR can not only Pull Off but Nail!

      • I TOTALLY agree with you Chick on your assessment of MOR! They are phenomenal and it would be very, very, very sad contest next year without them. So assist me in convincing our boys to perform in UMC 4!!

  30. Colleen, you are good at critiquing, you have a knack for noticing details. i will say this, listen carefully to ‘Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’ on the ‘Sticky Fingers’ album, it is not an instrumental, it was an unplanned jam the Stones pulled off in the studio, the song was suposed to stop at the end of the first part, with vocals, but Mick Talor and Keith kept going, so everyone else picked up their instruments again and the engineers let the tape roll. it is a classic in many ways, especially as it is all improvised! that’s right, completely unplanned or rehearsed. absolutely one of the best Stones songs around and a real crowd pleaser, as well as a musicians piece. your loyalty to MOR might fog your vision, but i see them in that light too, they rock, plain and, well simple is not the word for those guys. apparently our dynamics were good enough for Alecia, and she is an artist ans a producer, which means she knows her stuff. see you on the 19th, i know i will, MOR will be there. cheers, Jackson

    • KFR — Thank you. I will check that out. Sounds like an awesome listen. Often unplanned is better than planned. I hope to attend on the 19th, but I’ve got two other friend’s bands also playing that day. sometimes i wish i could clone myself. Haha… bet “Al” and Ed would HATE that!!

    • And I’m pretty sure Rolling the Stones hit that jam darn near note for note.

      • Tom — didn’t say it wasn’t played well, it most certainly was! I just thought for what was a stake and the short time in which to show your stuff, I felt is was a big risk to take for that long. As I said before, obviously it worked for them!

  31. What a competition, hey? It was so intense this year. The overall level of all the bands from day one was incredible. We were shaking in our boots every time we had to play. The bands we played alongside with, TMU, SC, FF, RTS, D&C, Generator, SKs, CCB, DTS, man, I don’t know how the judges did it. Every one of them was great. When Dave says that he was sick to his stomach when it came time to announce the winners, I totally believe it. We as band members felt a lot of stress during this whole competition, but it was only for our sets. The judges had to go through this week after week with every band. But in the end you all did a great job and we really did learn a lot from you. Thank you Ed, Alicia, Dave, for your commitment to helping us improve our art and taking the occasional blow from the audience. You rule. Now rest up and relax now, you earned it.

As for the bands and new friends, Jackson, you are the man. Not only do you tear it up on stage, you inspire and support all of us, your fans. Yep, I’m a fan, and now hopefully a friend as well. I’m a huge Stones fan, and you guys do the Stones the justice they deserve. I agree with Tom in that I also feel that you guys are the best tribute band out there. And yes, we’ve played with them all from the Atomic Punks, Iron Maidens, Wild Child, etc, etc, here in San Diego and in LA. Your band is a goldmine!

To Siren’s Crush, another great band and great bunch of people, I’ll never forget how my jaw dropped the first time I saw you hit the stage. Amazing! Your set was edgy, explosive, and full of energy. It’s obvious that you love what you do. But what’s even more amazing is that you are also some of the coolest people I’ve ever met. I look forward to seeing you guys again soon. Maybe you’ll be doing a Veruca Salt/ Pussycat mix by then.

I also want to thank our friends Brian and Jeff from Illusion Guitars. Those dragon guitars were not only cool looking, they played great. Thanks for your generosity. And then there’s Curtis and Phil (from Alice) our Eddies. It’s not Iron Maiden w/o Eddie and you guys brought it for us. To Dale, our Dave Patrone impersonator, thanks so much. I appreciate the extra effort you made for us, not only in being Dave Patrone, but for putting your head on the line for us. (That blade is sharp, what if there would’ve been a malfunction?) And of course we can’t forget our great friend Bruce (Alice). Thanks for your help and support. You really are “Alice”.

The bloggers, Coleen, Dave, the Lovely Mary, Rick Favale, and even Al (I actually enjoyed the tension you created. Most of the time anyway), thanks for bringing the audience perspective to the UMC. Your comments are always food for thought and entertaining as well. Next year, if we’re not in the UMC (which at this point we might not be) I’ll join you in the Blogger critiques. Of course, Coleen is a personal favorite of mine.

And as I said last year, one of the coolest things about this whole thing is that we’ve met and worked along side some of the best and greatest people in the business. Casey, you and your crew the best, it’s as simple as that. To be able to put together such an event which includes bands from every possible genre, and have it be as huge and successful as it is, I don’t know how you do it. Thanks so much for all the hard work you and your crew put forth for us. You are the main reason anybody looks and sounds great on that stage!

Finally, a huge thank you to all our friends and new fans who came out to support us. You know who you are. Rather than name you here are some initials: P, C, MJ, M, J, S, T, D, G, E, A, R,Z, B… Some of those initials pertain to more then one person, hope I didn’t forget anyone. In the words of a great man, Ozzy, “We love you all!!!”

BTW, Evette, don’t worry. I will not get a big head.

    Sergio (MOR Guitarist) signing out.

    • A Humble Man You Are! Rock On Bro!
      Can you play ‘Fluff?’

    • Sergio.

      I just had to reply.

You said everything that I couldn’t in my previous blog post. Teaches me to write when I’m wide awake.

Quite the array of talent and as I told the judges, over & over, that they truly had the toughest job. To balance fairness with constructive criticism in the direct face of said groups fans is quite the trick.

See you in a few weeks, bro. We’ll all have a blast.

      Charlie/Vince

    • Ditto Sergio,

It was an honor meeting and performing on the same night with all of you guys. I enjoyed every song in your last set. I was standing there watching your show with my older brother who was the one that got me into metal in the first place as a kid. I hadn’t had the pleasure of watching a metal performance with my bro in years. You brought back a lot of memories. Not just the songs you played, but how passionately you all did your thing up there.

Same goes for all the bands. The performance level really shows how much everyone cares about their craft. Rolling the stones — f*cking excellent. I mean a half hour concert level performance. Well deserved win for both bands. Don’t stop believing was awesome as well.

I’ve been asked a few times why we are not in the “best” of show lineup. It’s not that we turned it down or anything like that. The venue and SC just felt that since we play there regularly already, it was only fair to let the other bands get the well earned spots in the best of shows.

I hope to see you all in future competitions battling it out. I also hope all the conspiracy theories are put to rest. As you can see, this is a fair ballgame. Everybody gets a shot to win, you just gotta bring it! You saw SC shine, and then you saw SC face what many other great bands faced many rounds before the finals. When it’s not your night, when your performance is not what it should have been, you get judged fairly, plain and simple. Winning isn’t based on short skirts or “Casino friendly” pop songs. speaking of short skirts, too bad you all missed the grand finale. If we took first the girls were gonna come out in thongs and spray whip cream all over each other and then…ha ha — JK

Ed, David, Alicia, thanks for all of your kind words and thank you for letting us entertain you. Anytime you want to see us do our thing, you know where to find us. would love to have a few drinks with you guys.

Bloggers, I gotta say. you guys were as entertaining as the bands. Thanks for caring, hating, drooling, gushing etc etc.

      Peace

      Vic – Siren’s Crush

  32. Sergio – as the king of the blog, and of all things UMC, I must decree.

    YOU WILL RETURN NEXT YEAR.

    End of story.

    The King has spoken.

    • For once I support your decree! MOR next year… taking it all!!!

    • I agree Ed, a Band that is So Great, and as much Loved as MOR just has
to be apart of UMC because Bands like theirs are the reason this Contest
came about!! Love Ya MOR, and Serg! L..

  33. Yeah Ed…I am with you MOR needs to come back next year…I already have the “stage show” in pre production….LOL

  34. Sergio… do you and the other guys in MOR really think your fans are NOT going to let you sit out next year??? I mean really….

  35. Sergio, your silence is deafening. Perhaps you have misunderstood me. When I used the word “decree” I meant, that it was mandatory for you to return next year. This is not up for debate. Tell your guys that the mandate has been given.

    The King has Spoken, again!

  36. The show is run really well so these are just little nit picky thinkgs…

The canned music needs more variety. We keep hearing the same tunes each week, Tainted Love, Man in the Box,

You’ve got those big TV screens, I’d like to see more variety up there too. I have quite a few ideas of what you could splash up there during the shows. How about a still shot of the judge speaking during the critiques? Besides previous year’s images how about shots of shows earlier in the season?

…speaking of photos, Viejas should allow at least one person a waiver on the photo rule. an official UMC photographer?

Here’s another idea for the big screens… How about backstage interviews beamed up live. It would be during the set up for the next band, after the critique is done. The interviewer should not be a judge, since the judging would be among the questions. Someone with an entertaining personality. I would love to be the interviewer! …but would my jokes be too korny? ha ha

When the judges are doing their critique it would be nice if there was a couple of speakers under the balconies pointing back to the bar. That would keep the chit chat down when the judges are talking on the mic. Actually, speakers there would improve the higher range as heard way back in the room downstairs.

How about an incentive to attend round one like a player’s card except it would be a UMC card?

    more ranting to come…

    • Rant on my dear friend Dave M.! Your rantings have good merit and interesting ideas. The big screens also drove me crazy! During the finals it was fun to see the bands being played live on the screens. That would be nice the whole way through the contest. If not that (due to cost, or rules, or gaming commission, or decrees from kings, or rulers of the universe, or whatever other reason known to throughout the ages) then turn the screens off during the band performances. It became very annoying having the same loop being shown week after week!

Like the idea of an official UMC photographer and the back stage interviews. Couldn’t be you though, because aren’t you going to be appearing on the bill next year??? :-)

And the speakers in the back during the judge’s critique time is very needed!

I’m not following you incentive idea though. MORe info needed.

      Keep ranting my friend…
      ~~Peace!

      • Yes, I’d like to second that motion that Dave M.suggested about a UMC photographer or one photographer per band w/a photography agreement w/Viejas. We had something similar to this last year at House of Blues and it worked out fine. It ends up being a “win-win” situation for both the venue and the bands.

  37. Hey All, did I mention that Dave Patrone is playing a set after my trivia show tonight. You guys should come down man. It’s gonna be fun. Patrone and his band are gonna be a trivia team. Patrone says their gonna kick everyone’s butt. Then, after the trivia thingy, Their gonna play a set or two.

Holler me if you want more info.

    Ed

    • Would love to come down, but I’m worn out after last Sunday!! Plus, it’s kinda far for me to travel on a work day (man I hate it when work interfers with my life!)! Heckle him a few times for me somebody!! :-)

Good luck to everybody going up against Patrone! Kick his butt for me!!

Hey Dave… you know I love ya!

      ~~Peace!

  38. Thank you to everyone who particpated, enjoyed and lived the UMC with us this year. The finals were a magical experience with so much diversity and passion. It was everything I imagined 3 years ago on a rainy January day trying to put this thing together in my mind. A chance for everyone to have their “shot” at some real cash and for the fans to see their favorite bands showcased in the best looking and sounding venue in San Diego. What an opportunity and gift all these bands have given us, I can’t tell you how much fun it was for me to see the diversity of performances and the quality everyone brought to the show! It is my plan to ramp this thing up a few notches for next year! In addition, if the Showcase events become popular I think adding a new entertainment event at the facility is something worth considering. Thanks to everyone and I hope to see you again soon.

    Anthony G. San Pietro
    President
    Viejas Entertainment & Production

    • Mr. San Pietro,
I would like to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for formulating your imagination to fruition and creating this wonderful opportunity for San Diego’s lovers of music. You impressed me by your posting!

I have sat through every UMC Sunday night offering since the original UMC, with the exception of one when I went to my son’s wedding (Kind of important) in Florida! I also have been an active participant on this blog since it’s inception! Both events (Sunday nights and the conversations that follow on the blog) have been highly entertaining. Not only entertaining, but also musically educational.

I had little knowledge of metal music until I saw Monsters of Rock play at the UMC their first time. I not only now have an appreciation for metal, but have found new friends in the band as well. I have also been able to form other friendships with other bands as well. Thank you!

Thanks again to you and to the Viejas band for creating and presenting this opportunity. I know I have been somewhat vocal on this blog, and at times critical, but that is only because I care about making sure this event continues and grows! If you want to run any ideas by a fan from day one, I’m available. Ed and David P. know how to contact me. :-)

      ~~Peace

  39. Hello :::heloo, hellooo, helllloooo:::
    Echo :::eko, eco, exo:::

Does anyone from Viejas read this blog?
    well, for what it’s worth…
Cash for fourth place!!! how about
    $20,000 for first
    $7,000 for second
    $4,000 for third
    $1,000 for fourth?
and you should provide enough trophies for everyone in the band! That last one is something Dave Nevin of Detroit Underground mentioned. Even the Grammys are awarded one per band member!! geez

a Wildcard round would be cool too. Two extra nights for the second place finishers from round one. The actual semis would be five bands.

Just out of curiosity, how is the order of bands for round one decided? random? or do you try to match up groups? also, do you get a lot of entries? How do you choose who will not compete?

Old issue… DB meter, place in the area by the judges. Scored based directly on the reading instead of fixed points awarded for loudest etc.

Mandatory penalties!! if you go over time minus 5 points off your total score! If your equipment fails at a crucial moment in the set minus 5 points! (ala Dazed and Confused)

I think you should collect email addresses from the bands when they enter and the fans too (in some way) so you can promote this blog during the contest.

btw, the home page for the UMC has new random pictures from the finals! refresh the page to see a new pic…
    http://ultimatemusicchallenge.com/

in the pat my own back category, after the Stones picture was taken there was some disarray on the stage and the photographer was walking away when I stopped him and got MOR to pose for their picture! woo hoo! yea me! ha ha

    ok, carry on

    • That’s funny, I ask if anyone from Viejas reads the blog only to notice the post by Anthony above! ha ha I swear that wasn’t up yet when I posted…

  40. Hello :::heloo, hellooo, helllloooo:::
    Echo :::eko, eco, exo:::

Does anyone from Viejas read this blog?

Hey Dave, until you’re planning on giving away $32,000 of your own money, maybe you should be a little more genteel in your method of suggestion.

That being said, I think we’ve discussed all of these things already on the Blog:

    Hello :::heloo, hellooo, helllloooo:::
    Echo :::eko, eco, exo:::

Does anyone from Dave’s House read this blog?

    • Hey Dave,
Did you win trivia last night? how was your set? I had to paint the garage. :(
Yes, I do read the blog and I know (some) these suggestions have been made. While I don’t have $32,000 to give away I really dig this competition. I was involved last year including assisting Jason with the website. (btw, I never had access to the official UMC server) I am interested in what happens for 2010. Perhaps Viejas would like to tap into my enthusiasm?
      keep rockin’

    • Well DP…. answer Dave’s questions! Trivia… or did you get your ass kicked? Set… how did that go? Inquiring minds want to know. And yes, we have discussed (some) of this stuff already, but who’s place is it to say we can’t discuss it again and some more?

When and where is your next gig? When will you be back at Gio?

    • I didn’t win at trivia this week; but we had fun, on the last round I knew we were going to lose so I started heckling Ed.

He loves it when I yell, “Next Question” while he’s still reading the present question.

      DP

  41. I’m just bustin’ your chops buddy :)

  42. Check it out yall,
Ron from MOR will be doing an in studio interview on my internet radio show this Monday the 6th. We’ll be playing tracks off his new CD and hanging out with this badass. Just go to 2plyradio.com and it all plays right off the home page. We will be broadcasting live from 8 to 10 pm PST. There is an interactive chat and video feed so you listeners can chime in as well. It is going to be a good time.
    -Phil

    • Hey Phil can we go to this Site anytime and check out the interview
if we miss it on the 6th?

  43. “Al”! What has happened to you? Are you afraid to face the blog? Afraid to face the fact that your prediction didn’t come true? Aw come on back “Al”, we will be kind. Even if you’re not! You know we love ya! :-)

    I still understand……….
    ~~Peace!

  44. Evette and I went down to the 710 last night for the trivia. We didn’t really plan on playing since we thought that we would just plain suck, but Patrone took us in on his team. A short time later Sergio showed up as well as the bass player for Dave’s band. We didn’t win, but had several rounds with all correct answers and won free shots. I think we placed third. Patrone is a pretty sharp cookie. At some point Gavin showed up too. Did you know out of 100 people surveyed the most popular thing found on a hamburger is meat? Cheese was nowhere to be found. And Michael had a brother named Jackie Jackson?

We were only able to stay for part of Patrone’s set, but I must say he has a very tight band. I felt kind of bad that we were all chatting during the set, but that’s pretty much why we were there. I will see the band again some time when we can dedicate an evening. Dude can not only sing and dance, but can blow a mean harp too.

I wanted to let people know when we come back to the DreamCatcher on the 19th we’ll be shooting video, so ya’ll come out and go crazy!

    Peace out.

  45. I, unlike my fellow MOR member, was able to see all of Dave Patrone’s set. And I must say I enjoyed it very much. Not only was his band tight as Tom so noted, Dave is the real deal and a true performer. I will definitely go see him again. The crowd at the 710 was very lucky to get to see such a talent in such a small intimate setting. Great performance.

  46. “Ed” “Dave” and “Alicia” I guess your UMC Scores were Correct
and your Work as Our Judges was[at last]Appreciated for what it
was Worth. This Year “The UMC Land Of Blog” is alot more Quiet
and Calm. Gone are the endless Shouts and Whining and Tears from
post after post like Last Years Outcome. I’m ashamed to admit
i sort of miss all those Screaming Opinions/Attacks/Name Calling.
“Al” where are you?? All kidding aside You Guys did an Excellent
Job Judging! I’m gald your Fan Of Bloggers also agree.

    • Chick… now let’s not go overboard on the praise of our wonderful judges! Although I’m willing to admit that they work hard, I’m not ready to go so far as to say their UMC scores were correct. My final “scores” at the final of UMC were very different than their’s. This is not to say their’s were incorrect in their minds, but what they saw was different than what I saw and heard. Perhaps that was because I was viewing the contest from upstairs? Maybe. Perhaps our values of what was presented was different? Probably. Ed and I are still having “discussions” on the outcome of the scoring, but are agreeing to disagree. Although he simply says my “scores” are because I’m on crack! Whatever! I still have yet to have had a chance to sit down and discuss the outcome with DP, but I’m sure we will have a “lively” conversation when we do.

As to your statement of this year’s blog being “alot more Quiet and Calm”, yes I agree. And also agree that I too sort of miss the drama last year’s blog had. All one has to do is look at the amount of posts each week had to see the differnce in the DYNAMICS of the two years! :-) Last year the “big” topic of conversation was Tribute vs. Cover band and the definition of those. This year the “biggest” topic of conversation was if it was ok or not to go along with Ed’s decree to not use the words “dynamic” or “pitchy”. Very different topics of conversations!

      ~~Peace

      • You’re disagreement with the judges has more to do with the fact that you don’t know what you’re talking about than your position in the room…

        Love David

      • HA! I love your imitation of my pal “Al” Dave!
        Your opinion. Valuable it is!
        Love Colleen

  47. yes Linda,
After tonight’s radio show we should have the archive up on the site within a week or so.
    Rock on.
    -Phil

  48. Last night was the first of the “best of the best” Sundays. Unfortunately, I had another committment to go support my favorite band, Good Mojo who were performing for the Alpine Summer Concert Series, so was only able to catch the last band DSB. But I’m so glad I was able to be there for them! They once again were AWESOME! I can’t believe (no pun intended) how Juan can keep that intensity level of singing throughout all the songs. I just hope he doesn’t strip the vocal chords too early in his life and permantly hurt his singing. Take care of yourself Juan. Your voice is a precious gift. Treat it with tender care.

Drummer dude! Where do you get all that energy??? When you get going on the final drum part, your arms go into a blur when your drumming gets so fast and yet the sound you project during that time is flawless!! My husband is a “retired” drummer and he is very impressed with your ability!! As am I!

Apparently not everybody in the place was a Journey fan as Juan mentioned following a surprise “attack” when a disgruntled patron came up to the stage and threw something at the band (I’ve heard it was a cup of ice) in the middle of a song. The guitar player, who was closest to the flying missles, seemed a bit confused and surprised, but being the professional performer he is, he and the rest of the band continued on with the song with nary a missed beat or skipped word. Good job guys!

Once again, the performance we were treated to by DSB was top-notch and ok Juan… I will be sure to look up your web site to find out where you will be performing. Yes, I got your frequent commericial breaks for where to find that web site! JK :-)

I was a bit disappointed that I was unable to catch the first two bands, Geezer and Firefly. My husband chose to go early and caught them both and says they were both very good. He said that Geezer was once again entertaining. He loved the bit where they took a nap in the middle of the set. Firefly, he reported, were good, but had the volume level too loud, which distorted the vocals. My husband also said that Ed should stop talking throughout the band’s performances and shut up and listen to the bands. (Permission was given by my husband to say that!) You know I love ya Ed.

Lastly, I’d like to say that I was a bit disappointed also in the amount of people present to hear these bands. I’m hoping it was only because of the holiday weekend and everybody was either too tired from the festivities of the weekend or still coming back from whereever they went. Viejas put on a GREAT contest for all of us to enjoy and came up with the idea to present an encore gig of many of the favorite bands for us. I hope more people will come out and show their appreciation to Viejas and to these wonderful bands in the next three weeks.

And speaking of encores… Thank you DSB for responding to the crowd’s cries for one more song at the end of your set. The people who were there loved your set! I even had fun watching Ed rocking out to virtually every song you played and joined in with him requesting “ONE MORE SONG”! Renee was up front throughout most of your set, as was many of your fans there last night.

Thank you Geezer, Firefly and Don’t Stop Beleivin’ for a fun encore of your talents! Come back for next year’s UMC!

    ~~Peace

    • Yes I was, Colleen! And they all did very well! I wrote my comments about this night, but, I put it on the blog for the Best of the Best.. Stupid me! I will be there next Sunday also…I am a fan of ALL the bands, so I will be there to support them all! See ya on Sunday!

  49. I can smell a control freak a mile away and Colleen definately has the odor, dude, go home and boss your kids around, for you to second guess the judges is a huge display of your huge ego! I feel sorry for the men of the world who are puppets for their wives. now, i may be wrong, but only if you are a frustrated, wanna be musician which can be the only other explanation for your posts. you be mighty full of yourself, and i bet your friends are too scared to tell you. it was the insert from candle (the red ones on the tables) that was thrown, not a glass, and it was thrown at the bass player, not the guitarist, actually it hit the Viejas bass amp. these little details you missed tell me your powers of observation are lacking, ergo your judgingements of the bands are probably askew as well. why don’t you just admit you have a crush on Ron from MOR and be done with it, have some ovaries dude. because you saw it from upstairs? what kind of quackery is that? try to grow an open mind, because your mind is just like a parachute, it only works when it’s open. you are either on crack as Ed states, or you need medication honey. I saw the finals, the judges almost got it right, except i thought DSB should have placed better, i hear they killed it last night, but i could not make it, i will be there next week to heckle TMU and the diamond queen, your pal Al

  50. The show last night was beyond awesome. And I agree with Colleen that DSB blew it up. Had they taken the best 20 minutes of that set, and applied it to the finals, they very well may have taken the whole thing down.

Firefly, Shelli, Chris and the rest. You guys are so fun, so alive. Your guitar player is a shredder and not a bad singer either. Shelli, you kill me every time on “Alone.” Chris, you are in my top 3 drummers of the UMC, right next to the drummer from DSB. I can’t wait to see you play with Old School. When is that again?

My only critique is the Talking Heads tune, “Burning Down the House.” While many of the songs that Shelli sings (that are originally sung by males) are excellent, rocking renditions (think “Rock and Roll” By Zep) there was just something about your voice that did not apply well to Talking Heads. I can’t put my finger on it. You sang it correctly, and with energy. The band performed it AWESOMELY. It was just, something didn’t quite gel between your tone and the tone of David Byrne, in my opinion.

Then there was the Geezer boys, who opened up the night to a small, sleepy crowd. But they did their thing and got us into the mood. They are so funny AND so good. They do their comedy bits and it’s all goofy and silly, but when it’s Weezer time, man they nail it. Especially on the harmonies. Also a big fan of the lead guitarist. But what makes Geezer great is they play a different show everytime. Different songs. Different gags. They’re not afraid to bust out new shit before they’ve been polished. Like the Michael Jackson tribute (“Billy Jean” lyrics against the Nirvana tune). Or the Beastie Boys at the beginning of the set. I’ve seen them three times now and it’s different every time, except the nap, which is, and should be a staple.

Great job guys. I am now, officially, your fan.

As for my “talking throughout the performance” well, Owen knows that’s bullcrap. I may have had and received periodic comments(about the music) throughout the night, but I largely focused on the music.

Of course, it’s easy for Owen to say that when he was sitting all by himself. But try sitting at a table of 7-10 people and tell everybody who tries to talk to you, at one time or another, “Shhhh – I want to hear the music.” Not so easy, but something I did several times.

What can I say, it was a blast for me last night to be able to hang with my friends and watch and hear the music without any judging duties attached. I was having a good time, without any pressure. If I want to talk to my friends, it is my prerogative. So, you have my permission to tell Owen to bite me.

Next Sunday is the Bad Blokes, The Mighty Untouchables, and Diamond is Forever. It’s gonna be great. We’re having a good time at these. You should come for sure.

  51. “Al”! My Pal! Welcome back. Good to see you haven’t been scared away. I love to have a worthy opponent!

Re. some of your comments: “control freak”… perhaps, but not as much as you; “second guess the judges”… hasn’t that, including you, been what we’ve been doing ever since the inception of the UMC blogs? That’s what keeps the blog interesting dude! The freedom of being able to offer your opinion, which btw, you seem to revel in doing! “you be mighty full of yourself, and i bet your friends are too scared to tell you”… no, my friends have no qualms at telling me exactly what they think of me! :-) Which must mean that you and I are friends!

I have a question for you though “honey”. If you missed DSB last night how do you know what was thrown at the band???

    Still understanding,
    ~~Peace

  52. Actually, I find it kind of lame to critique bands’ performances at Viejas after the contest is over. I can see it now: for the next year we are going to hear an evaluation every time Sirens’ Crush plays, “Oh the bass player was great but one of the girls was pitchy this week… If only they played that way on the finals… Those dresses are so SLUTTY” waaaaaaah!

If I were a band that played last night, I would be thinking you were quite lame since we’re not competing and you were up here on the blog still telling them what is wrong with them. The competition is over and now you should just enjoy the bands and STFU.

On another note, I think it’ makes perfect sense that not a lot of people are showing up; the reason is quite clear:

The crowds were really there to see the judges :P

    • Hey “Al”! Apparently you and I are not the only ones with a “huge ego”!

Yes, Dave… we all came to the UMC 3 to see our gurus and hear the perils of wisdom being expounded onto us. We are now so much better and can live our lives more fully! :-)

    • if there are “perils” of wisdom then

obviously you live a safe life Colleen :P

      • oops… misspell! Pearls
But then perhaps that was an subliminal to myself about listening to your words! A dangerous venture??? :-)

      • And… the not so veiled “insult” is not lost on me!
        See you Thurday! heeheehee!
        Love, Colleen!

    • It’s a valid point Dave, however, speaking of my critique of Burning Down the House, it just seemed dishonest of me to gush on and on about how great Firefly, without revealing my one, small grievance about it. It just felt wrong.

Also, as a writer who occasionally receives positive reviews, I always like it best when the reviewer gives honest, constructive criticism with the praise and kudoses.

  53. Collen, you live in denial, OK with me honey, it’s your life. i offered opinions, i did not post and say something along the lines of ‘my final scores’ were different from the judges. i made predictions, and pointed out glaring mistakes by competitors that were ‘overlooked by the Judges. i pray for your hubby. you would die to be right, you seem to live for it, where as i have, several times said that i could be wrong, which you will now parrot in a weak attempt to save face, ooops, i just ripped that option from your fingers. unless you are my puppet, which you have been all along. you are so predictable,it has been a blast performing ‘creative manipulation’ on you and several others here on the blob, er blog. the botton line is, you are not a musician, you have no basis for your scores and opinions other than the fact that you are a fan, a bulldog as well, but just a fan, who thinks her poop stinketh not, and that her words are golden turds that roll off her tongue for the edification of the idiot masses, by God, what a massive ego you have, it’s killing you and you don’t even know it. whereas i am one of the greatest accordian player in the wotld! take that Zanex lady!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Al, you can’t be the greatest Accordion Player in the world, My buddy Lou Fanucchi is the greatest acc… oh wait.. Lou is that you?!?

    • Oh I see you said ONE of the greatest accordion players in the world, I stand corrected :)

    • LOL!! I love your posts “Al”! I find them to be very entertaining!! Your “‘creative manipulation’” has been a pleasure to be a part of! BTW… how do you know I am not a musician? And if I am not a musician, why would my scores not have basis? If being a musician gives one basis for being able to have “scores”, then are you now saying that Ed should not be offering “scores” in this competition?? Just askin’.

Oh! You didn’t answer my question as to how you know what was thrown? Hmmmm crack in your facade???

      ~~Peace

  54. “Al” leave my girlfriend alone! or i might have to kick your AS#
P.S. Everyone I read the Poster Like Award presented to each Band
and it says “Cover Band” not “Tribute Band” just to finally clear
up that Three Year Old UMC misunderstanding among The Fans.

    • Hey girlfriend!! Thanks for coming to my defense! At least I’m assuming you meant me! :-) Gotta be careful here… can’t let my ego raise it’s ugly head!

I love your observation of the Award! “COVER BAND” huh? Yep! That does settle the debate of “Cover” and “Tribute”. But should Viejas not change RTS’s Award to say “Tribute”??? JK! Alwsys like to stir an old pot! :P
      ~~Peace

  55. Oh my god, really, Colleen, Chick, still, you don’t get it? I love you girls, but don’t you understand the simple concept of parent categories and sub categories. A cover band is parent category. It encompasses all bands that perform “covers” or, songs that were written and performed by someone else.

Beneath the cover band parent categories are several sub categories. Such as, tribute band, who performs the music of only one artist.

Put another way, all tribute bands are cover bands, but not all cover bands are tribute bands.

This is exactly why the award says cover band and not tribute band, so it can include all types of cover bands, including tribute.

Now come’on ladies, let’s get those heads out of those collective asses and get with the program!

    The King has spoken

  56. Some of you keep talking about reopening the debate or settling a debate but you’re really just reiterating how unbelievably thick-headed you are.

    There is Fruit:
Types of fruit include oranges and apples
All fruit is not called an orange but all oranges are fruit. Can you wrap your silly little brains around that concept??

This argument was cute for a while; you know, that there were some girls acting like girls and being all cutesy and stupid… “tee hee!” I was tolerating it for a while. It was cool, you guys want to contribute to the discussion even though you have no idea what you’re talking about. Tee Hee!!!

But all bands that play (aka “cover”) songs written by other bands are “COVER BANDS”

All bands that pay tribute to another band are “Cover bands” because they are “covering” the songs of another artist. All bands that impersonate another band are “Cover Bands” because they are “covering” the songs of another artist. Technically even Jazz bands who play standards are COVER BANDS because they are “covering” the songs of another artist.

Get it? Tee hee! so silly…

  57. Chick! Well that was fun! I love getting the boys all riled up!

Ed! Of course, if you are using the word “cover” as a “parent” catagory, then all bands are considered a cover band. And DP agrees with you using his analogy as “fruit”. However there is a difference between calling Sirens a cover band and calling RTS a cover band. True, both are covering music, but one cannot call RTS simply a cover band. They are a TRIBUTE COVER band. They are a sub-catagory of the parent word “cover”. I think we are in agreement there.

However, Sirens, DU, TMU, are all true COVER bands. They “cover” different artists/bands. MOR are a sub-catagory of “cover” bands, because I can’t see them “covering” Barry Manalow! Although I’d still love to hear them try covering Barry’s “Mandy”. MOR is a METAL cover band. The David Patrone Trio is a JAZZ cover band. Both those bands cover a certain genre of music. But just as I can’t see MOR playing Barry Manalow, I can’t see David’s band playing Iron Maiden.

But then, this whole discussion has been run into the ground. As I’ve said much earlier in this contest…I’m done with this discussion! It was just fun to stir up the pot one more time. I knew it would get the king and his prince’s attention once again!!

    The thick-headed queen has spoken!! :-) :-)
    ~~Peace Ya’ all!

  58. Lol Colleen. How many time have you said you are done with discussion? How many times has Patrone used food as a metaphor?

So, this Thursday my cover band MOR will be opening up for cover> tribute band Damage Inc at the Second Wind in Santee. We will actually be a cover> tribute band that night as we will be doing all Iron Maiden. Yes, MOM – Monsters of Maiden.

    Nanu Nanu

    • Tom–I keep saying I’m done, but some people just won’t let it drop! Chick brought it up…I commented briefly on what she said in a kidding manner…and then Ed started it all up again with Patrone jumping on board too!! (Although I think DP is just hungry!) I think it so funny that this topic just will not die! Ed so much wants me to “come over to his side”. What he doesn’t realize is that we really agree (ow! ow!). We are just seeing the same thing from different angles! Or from different sides of the same fruit tree!! :-)

MOM! Hey I like that! The cover band MOR, becoming a cover band of a tribute cover band! Now make sure you cover all the Iron Maiden and don’t venture away from IM or else you will just become a cover band again, albeit a cover metal band!! :P
      ~~Peace

  59. I guess I failed to mention Damage Inc is a tribute to Metallica.

    665: Neighbor of the Beast.

  60. Hey Tom! Will there be a cover charge for this cover band, opening for a cover band?

  61. Tom:
I use food to explain things because it’s the one thing I think that really simple people can understand.

    Coleen:
Calling any cover band a cover band is the same as calling any other cover band a cover band, I can’t believe you guys are so ridiculous. I thought you were smarter than that; but, I’ve been wrong before…

Your ignorant statement: “there is a difference between calling Sirens a cover band and calling RTS a cover band” has finally pushed me to be a dick.

    NO THERE ISN’T!!!

Your statement sounds as foolish as if you were to say, “there is a difference between calling an orange a fruit and calling an apple a fruit!”

One is a citrus fruit and one is a fleshy fruit but they would both belong in a FRUIT CONTEST!

I normally wouldn’t get so incendiary (and believe me I’m holding back) but you keep saying pompous things like, “I’m done with this discussion” (as if you are still right) and then you love to bring it back up again after you have CLEARLY been proved wrong. You have long since passed the point of irritating me and other people on this blog with your complete absence of logic and or ability to listen to anyone else’s logic.

Now I’m DONE with this discussion as the old saying goes, “Don’t wrestle with a pig, cause you both get dirty and the pig likes it.”

    DP
(trying to wipe some of the dirt off)

    • Geeze Patrone! Take a chill pill…! It’s really not that important in the greater scheme of life! Will it make you feel better if I say to you that you are right? Ok David…you are right!

You call me ignorant… I am not. You call me foolish… I am not. I just have a difference of opinion and have a right to that opinion. Which if you read a little more carefully, you will see is really not that different from yours.

And BTW… I do listen to your logic and, unlike you, respect your version of said logic. Both our logic is the same!! Why can’t you see that? But now I will wipe the dirt off me!

You know I love ya! Even if you do call me names and dis-respect me! But as I’ve said before, don’t come onto this blog unless you can take the slings and arrows! Believe me my dear friend, I’ve endured many barbs being cast my way and will endure many more in the future. I’m just a little hurt to have them come from you. But you have a right to your opinion and I will fight to the death your right to express them.
      ~~Peace

    • It’s really not that important because YOU are wrong. I see…

I love you Colleen but how do you tell someone you love that they are wrong and no matter how they try to rephrase it, you are wrong.

You’re like that guy in “The Holy Grail” who gets his arms cut off then his legs and keeps thinking he’s going to win. It’s his opinion that he isn’t going to die. That doesn’t make it real or right; and like the movie it was funny at first time and now it’s juvenile and annoying to listen to.

How can you have a difference of OPINION about a FACT? An orange is a fruit and you can’t tell me that an Orange isn’t a fruit because it’s not an apple.

I’m sick of hearing you call it a “difference of opinion” when you are actually and have always been wrong about this. All of these bands are cover bands. This is a cover band competition. A tribute band is a type of cover band just like a top 40 band, impersonators, standards, whatever A band that plays their own originals is NOT A COVER BAND and is the ONLY exception.

This is not my OPINION this is a FACT.

      I’m going hiking.

  62. MOR is a tribute band. They are a METAL tribute band. Or as Ed would say they are a tribute to AWESOME. But it wouldn’t sound as good if you called them an awesome tribute band.

  63. I’m told there is a $10 cover and we go on at 8:30pm. Damage Inc at 9:30.

  64. And even Homer Simpson understands beer and doughnuts. It’s just funny.

This is a tribute to the best song in the world. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4349831125947887094

  65. You lose us, colleen, when you say that tribute bands are not “true” cover bands and that variety cover bands are “true” cover bands. That is sooo absurd. If they both fit the definition of cover, than by definition they are both “true” cover bands.

Now, you may have a preference for one over the other — which, it seems that you do, and which explains a lot since the whole argument began with you and others claiming the judges had a preference for tribute bands — but your preference does not change the fact that tribute bands are also cover bands.

Secondly, your defense of your not living up to your decree “I am done with this conversation” is weak, even for you.

You say, “but some people just won’t let it drop! Chick brought it up…and then Ed started it all up again with Patrone jumping on board too!!”

Um, Colleen, none of us declared we would not discuss this topic anymore. Only you. It is up to you to honor it, not us. Don’t blame me when you can’t honor your decrees. The whole point of saying, “I will not discuss it anymore” is for the times when others do, and you strongly hold you ground and refuse to respond.

    The Overlord has spoken!

  66. Tom, what time are you going on on Saturday? What about Dazed? anyone else playing?

  67. 710 Beach Club 7/11/09 – Dazed and Confused goes on about 9:30 for and 1.5 hour set. Then we play 1.5 hours.

  68. Good-bye Michael. Your legacy lives on.

  69. Oh yeah! I just remembered why I checked here in the 1st place. How did it go last Sunday? Anyone from the blog go? Just wondering. Must have been pretty cool to see the bands just performing and being themselves without all the pressure, huh? Just curious to see how it went =)

  70. Very cool! Looks like it went really well. That’s awesome that Ed was able to go too =)

  71. Colleen, your problem is shared by many unfortunate people, SADKI Syndrome, it is no laughing matter, and you suffer from it terribly. one of the worst aspects of SADKI is that it cannot be self-diagnosed, it must be observed by others, usually some one who is impartial, or does not know you, a loved one or a friend cannot observe it. the main symptom of SADKI has been observed many times on the blog, by many people, several of whom are too close to you to point it out. fortunately for you, i care enough to tell you, and after that, it will be your responseability to seek treatment, although treatment rarely works i am sorry to say. SADKI, Stupid And Don’t Know It, which is very closely related to GADKI, geek and don’t know it, both are terribly debilitating afflictions, striking thousands all over the country, like that poor chap from Tennessee i saw on a news program the other day, he was standing five feet behind a woman being interviewed on TV, and was furiously picking his nose, now he KNEW he was in camera range, but pick away he did, an obvious and pathetic case of SADKI, please seek help, although I doubt it will do any good, but we will pray for you………….to get hit by a bus, hahahahahaha, mmmmwwwaaaaahahahahahaha

  72. oh, and keep praying for the pediphile Colleen, another obvious flare up of your condition, i danced a jig when the pig died, MJ, rot in hell, you know what you did, you bastard, Al

  73. You know, I feel like speaking my mind a little about this whole competition thing and music in general. Maybe no one will care, maybe some will. Maybe some hateful people will just pick it apart and be rude to feel better about themselves, let them do what they will. At this point, I just need to get it off of my chest. I have occasionally been checking out this blog, mainly after our Siren’s performances, to get some constructive (and not so constructive) criticism, in hopes to improve our show, make the crowd happy etc. I am very grateful to those who spoke up and judged honestly, it helps all of us learn from our mistakes and improve our shows and performances. And to those who supported their bands, I think that is a very nice thing to do. One thing though, that I feel is missing or lacking from these blogs, is the LOVE for the music. Why do we perform week after week for so little money, or sometimes, no money at all? Why do we care so much? Why do we try so hard to nail those parts over and over, nail those harmonies, or that one little run? Why do we listen to a song a thousand times and read the words to try to feel what the writer was saying when they wrote or sang that song so that we are able to express that to our audience? Why do we rehearse or stay up till morning hours writing songs, for days sometimes forgetting that we have to eat or sleep? Why do we sometimes bicker with fellow band mates or managers over the songs that we choose to do or not do? Why do we take failure so hard and to heart and keep it inside, but still say “that’s ok! I’m going to learn from this and get better and be stronger for it!” . Because we love music. We love to entertain. We love to bring joy to peoples’ lives and put smiles on their faces. We love to be at a wedding (yes, I said wedding, throw your tomatoes, I don’t give a crap) singing “I’ll Be There” to a newlywed couple as they dance and we become a part of an important memory in their life. We love to sing songs that move and touch people. We LOVE to show new audiences and younger crowds that LIVE music played and sung by musicians is COOL. We want to inspire those children to pick up a guitar, play a piano, not just press a button on a computer that will write the whole song for you. All of us bands do this, because for some reason, we have a passion and love for it. Some yes, some people just go through the motions after a while for the $, but I know that at some point in their lives, they wanted to be someone who brought that joy to others. They wanted to be someone who sent a message to others. Maybe they used to write music with hopes to make it big, but maybe priorities changed and they decided to do it on a smaller level. Whatever the reason, we love to entertain, sing, dance, play, whatever we do. There were a few times that I came to this blog throughout the competition and could just FEEL the hatred towards the different bands or just people in general. WHY? Seriously. WHY? Why do you choose to be blatantly mean, rude and hateful? Is it that important to you to hate on other people because it is easy when you have the protection of being anonymous and never have to confront those that you hurt? It starts to become more about hurting others then the music and entertainment. Lying, making up stories, assumptions about people you don’t even know. It’s interesting. A lot of the times, the blogs started off supportive and constructive, then got meaner and uglier as they went along, like a predator stalking its prey, just waiting for its chance to attack. Anyways, I know, I know that we have to take the good with the bad and we have to be strong enough to deal with the negativity and we put ourselves out there and need to deal with it blah blah blah. All I’m asking is that all of the fans and all of the bands, although we are competing, just remember that most of us are in it for the same reason and sometimes things like this make us do or say stupid things, spark rumors etc. But its music. It’s a GOOD thing. It should be a POSITIVE thing. Yes, we all have something different to bring to the table, but we are all talented and we all love it. Anyways, just in case anyone is still out there reading this blog, especially the friends, family and supporters, I just hope that you can put aside your bias’s and differences and think about it from all of the different bands standpoints and understand WHY it Is that we do what we do. It’s not to turn people against each other or to be hateful, it’s to bring joy to ours and to your lives. I know, it’s a competition and it’s not always going to be pretty and I don’t expect it to be all butterflies and flowers and I don’t expect everyone to like everything. I’m just ranting now. Maybe some audience members will get some sort of insight as to what we go through. I guess that’s really all I wanted to say =) To all the bands performing on Sundays, go show them what you’re made of!!!!!! Don’t let anyone or anything discourage you. Just keep doing what’s in your heart and what you love, and that will come off true and touch your audience in every performance. Take care!

    Angie, signing off =)

    • You’ve brought joy Angie :-)

    • Angie — thank you for your words. They are so true. And, for the most part, this blog has been kinder than last year. The mean, when it was there, tended to be meaner, but the respect and support that virtually all bands had for one another was miles better than last year. And last year was fairly good also.

It really is all about the music. And the musical talent we’ve had this year has lifted my soul. Thank you to you and to all the bands for months of pleasure. Keep your positive, and let go of the negative you may have encountered when reading this blog. The blog will go away, but the music will last much longer than any of us!

Stay in touch Angie… as Tom said, you brought joy. We need your joy here.
      ~~Peace

    • Very well said,Angie! Hopefully all the “hate mongers” out there who constantly sling s*%t about others will read what you’ve said, and think before they write. You are absolutely right–it IS all about bringing joy and happiness through music. And, your band did that for me. It was so worth squeezing my way through the crowd just to get a good look at you guys, and watching how much energy and love you put into each song you played. Thank you, Angie!

  74. Looking for a lead guitarist. I thought this would be the best place to look for one knowing the UMC has the best musician in the county performing at it.
    Thanks Bruce aka Alice…

    http://www.myspace.com/alicandthecoopergang

  75. Yeah Angie – that’s the thing about “putting yourself out there.” You make yourself a target for the neanderthals and neanderthalettes of the world.

But, when you put yourself out there, the love and passion you have goes out there too. Make no mistake about that. Alas, few people take the time to write/speak about something that’s “out there,” unless it’s to complain or talk shit about it. But, it’s out there nonetheless, Angie, YOU are out there, touching people in all the right ways. I respect you for that. Much love

  76. NOW WHO’S GOING TO 710 BEACH CLUB TO SEE MONSTERS AND DAZED?

    I am –

    LET’S GO PEOPLE, RALLY UP!

  77. I hear for a shot of Rumplemintz Ed will give you a lap dance.

  78. Hi gang, just got back in town… I’m enjoying the blog posts I missed since I’ve been gone. ha ha

I’ve been on the look out for Colleen’s post where she finally admits she’s wrong about the tribute/cover thing. haven’t seen it yet but she got kinda close with “you are right”

Come on Colleen, just admit it. It will give you a freeing experience!

  79. “Ed” I Never Said “Tribute Band” was’nt a “Cover Band”!
Any Band Not Playing Their Own Music Is? What? A Cover Band[Hello]

    • I wondered about that. I always seemed to remember you being on the right side of that debate. However, the way your post was worded made it sound like you were supporting the point of view that tribute bands should not be included in the contest.

  80. Yes “Colleen” your my “Girlfriend” in the Land of Blog.
but i wish i had’nt stayed away for a few days after my last post
because “No one Understood My Point” My Point was you don’t have
to be a “Tribute Band” who only pays Tribute to One Artist!
Anytime you Cover Other Artists Music are’nt you in Away paying
Tribute to that Artist? In My Opinion anytime you Play Someone
Elses Music your “Paying Tribute” by “Covering” Their Songs!
“A Tribute Band” is nothing more then a “Cover Band” saying
    “Thank You” AMEN…

  81. I got your tribute RIGHT HERE!…

  82. Went to see DP last night @ the MerK. Dave, your band’s keyboard and bass players are awesome. Would have liked to have heard a few more vocals however.

If you want to go catch Dave at this venue, I would suggest sitting upstairs. The sound is much better up there. Although Jeff has acheived as good a sound mix possible he can get at this venue, he has acheived a much better sound mix than what he was able to get the first night they played there. Plus, if you sit upstairs, it’s easier to heckle Dave!!

I requested “Mandy”, but didn’t get the request. Dave said he couldn’t remember the words. Guess I’ll have to request it from Ron the next time I go to listen to MOR!! :-) But did get the request “Tangerine”. Thanks… nice song.

Speaking of MOR… Tom, how did the gig go last night? It was difficult to choose which band to go listen to last night. Heart (who was playing @ Humphrey’s), MOR or Dave. But since Dave was within walking distance, we chose to go there. Tonight it’s off to El Cajon to catch my friend’s band, Good Mojo, tomorrow off to Del Mar to catch Jaime Valle and of course Sunday off to Alpine and Viejas.

Travel safe Dave when you go to SF. Hope you liked my “peace” offering. I guess the song “Tangerine” kinda “goes” with that doesn’t it? BTW… thanks for the apology.
    ~~Peace

  83. Colleen, it was an off night for some of the boys. You made the right call.

    • Sorry to hear that, but that happens. Which is why it is good that each night of the UMC judgeing be from a clean slate and not have any bearing on how good (or not good) a previous performance was. Any band at any given night might just have a bad night. Or…. an exceptionally good night.

  84. Check out this article: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2009/jul/08/bloodless/

  85. “Ed” i re-read what i posted about[well you know] You were so
Right! I really should have proof read it before i posted it!
“Better Yet” I should have looked back at last years blog on the
“Debate” then perhaps i would’nt have allowed my buzy little
fingers to type a post about it at all?
“Sorry My King and Master” please don’t behead your loyal Court
Jester she is just a Silly Fool!

  86. Ahh, don’t be so hard on yourself Chick. Yes, it is true, I have had the heads of others for far less, but you are still way in the positives as far as this blog – my kingdom – is concerned.

    • Chick… Let me bear witness to the fact that Ed does take the heads of meny, but sometimes he will allow you to have yours back. This too I can bear witness to having been the receipiant of such beheading! Which why I always sign off…
      ~~Peace!

  87. Colleen, all the hippies suck, i wanna see you say peace when some a$$hole cuts you off on the highway. just more of your self-rightousness, what a marroon. Angie, that was one hell of an inspirational piece of writing. i bet you can write one hell of a song. i was wondering if it was in any way a response to some of the venom on the blog? like mine? i never mean anything by it, ‘cept when it comes to ‘ol miss wannabe herself, the flatulating mouth that roared, get a life C.

    • Al — No I don’t say peace to the asshole who cuts me off for two reasons. 1. They probably wouldn’t be able to hear me and 2. I don’t really get that upset because I figure you probably have a bigger need to get to where you are going than I.

I’m glad to see that you actually don’t mean what you post, but I’m honored to be your one exception! :-) Because I DO understand…

And to you, my pal Al? I say…….
      ~Peace!

    • “Al” i’m really going to have to Kick Your A#s if you don’t
Leave My Girl ALONE! Your So Cruel! I thought He-Shes[like you]were Cool?
OMG I used the word “Cool” I guess I’m Just a Hippie who was to Young
to be a real Hippie in the True Era of Hippies I’m Guessing Your Era?
I’m I Right? Only an “Old Crone” or “Hag” could post such Cold Replys
back to our “Little Angel Colleen” Who’s bright outlook on everything
reminds us how “Beautiful The World Really Is” and to not let other
drivers[or bulls##t]Stress us Out We Would All Live Longer!
But “Al” I’m Sorry to Say you have Alot Of Work Ahead Of You
It Looks Like Anger and Stress are your Middle Name or maybe it’s
      “B#t#h” ~Peace!

      • Thanks for the support Chick. It’s always nice to have a friend on your side. But don’t be too hard on “Al”. S/He is only doing what comes naturally. I understand and even though some of the barbs hurt, I still find entertainment in the venomous comments. It is what it is!
        ~~Peace

  88. Went to see Monsters of Rock and Dazed and Confused last night at club 710. Not a lot of people there, but rock and roll was definitely happening in that club.

Doesn’t look like I’m going to make it tonight though. Too much work on my plate.

have fun all, tell the bands I said hi

  89. Went to the Sunday performances and had a fun time.

The Bad Blokes brought a little more variety to their act and we were treated to a little Irish like rock n roll. Fun! Clay offered to buy a round of drinks for the place if anybody could keep up with him, without any mistakes on one song, but nobody took him up on his challenge. Understandable when we were treated to his “speed singing”! Have to wonder though if he was able to not make any mistakes either. But he was going so fast on that song, that I doubt anybody could have caught a mistake had he made one.

Diamond was again a classic performance and entertained the audience with finesse, professionalism and style of Neil Diamond. The harmonies were outstanding and the entire performance was tight and it was clear that all members were ready for the event, especially the drummer. Dude! You were awesome! You played with expertise and power when needed, yet were able to bring it down with finesse when softness helped to create the mood. Great job! It was fun to watch “Neil” sing to Renee who was up front rocking out with this band and the next. Had a friend there who had never seen this band before, but is a huge Neil Diamond fan, who has attended Neil D.’s concerts. He kept saying over and over that this band was just as good! High praise guys!!! (and ladies)

Lastly was The Mighty Untouchables. Once again we, the audience was treated to a tight performance. The only diappointment was the “casualness” of the attaire of the ensemble. During the semis MU was dressed in suits and ties and they all had a very professional “look”. Last night, they all wore basic “street clothes” and didn’t have the “polished look”, which was a bit disappointing. A friend mentioned that it was like having Santa Claus show up in blue jeans. :-) But aside from that, the MU gave a great performance and several of us agreed that had they done that set during the finals (minus a few songs for time limit), they may have actually taken the night. True there were a couple minor flaws, but that’s what makes a live performance interesting. Danielle Tucker’s vocals were outstanding and she blended beautiful with the other vocalists.

The crowd was a bit sparse with the largest crowd present during the Diamond set. But regardless of the largeness of the crowd, the appreciation shown by those present was warm.

We are looking forward to next Sunday when heavy rock will take over the venue. I’ve spoken with several of the staff, and they are anticipating a much larger crowd for next week. I think they may be right. MOR!!

    ~~Peace

P.S. Ed… it was just not the same withut our fearless leader king!

  90. “Colleen” maybe “Al” is some kind of Super Pro Musician?
Maybe we should ask Ed to think about adding He/She on as a Judge
Next Year? Never mind The UMC is probably to Far Below He/Shes
Level for He/She to take time away from Recording Original Music
Producing, Studio work, Touring World Wide, and The Publication
of He/Shes New Book Titled “I know Everything about Music” by Al.

    • :-)
But Chick… have you not been paying attention??? “Al” has already informed us that s/he is one of the best accordian players!

  91. Sunday night was the first time I had seen Diamond is Forever, and I was so impressed! He does Neil quite well, and I loved the performance. My husband said “Neil” looks so much like a YOUNG Neil Diamond that it was creepy! I’ve never been sung to by a ’star’(haha) so, that was really cool! TMU was really really good!(and I was briefly ’sung to’ again–yay!) Their harmonies just give me chills! And, what about them doing Bohemian Rhapsody?? No, it wasn’t perfect, but,OMG, it was great! And the drummer singing while jammin’ on those drums.. WOW!
My husband is a drummer, and he says that is one of the hardest things to do,and if you do it, it better be GOOD! That guy(sorry,I don’t know your name!) was very good! The Bad Blokes were very entertaining, but, after about 4 songs, I was getting a headache. Diamond is Forever made me forget all about it, though!
Great fun that night! Not sure if I will make it next week, big weekend..we’ll see!

  92. Hey all, hope you can come out and support the show this Sunday with Monsters of Rock, Rolling the Stones and 619.

  93. I’ll be there, just look for the leather and lace.

  94. F#*%^!!!g nosy butt

  95. shut yer pie hole and mind yer own bizness, beeeotch

  96. you must be right up there with a mud fence when it comes to brains

  97. Hey Ed,
Give us some details on the “Country” version of the UMC? I don’t see it on the Viejas website.

  98. “Al” Leather&Lace? Should We Be Expecting To See Stevie Nicks?
    or Don Henley In Drag??

  99. Well, any one want to comment on last nights show? I wasn’t able to attend, and would like to hear how it went! Colleen–fill me in, honey!! (:

  100. oh Chick, which ever it is, i have a pair of handcuffs for you sweetie.

  101. Last night was another fun evening and the best crowd since the finals! They even opened upstairs to accomodate the ever increasing crowd.

RTS opened the evening in their own “Stones” style we’ve come to love, and “Mick” danced out onto the stage, grbbed the audience and didn’t let go until one short hour later. All the standard Stones songs done perfectly and they had the same high energy that they had during Round 1 of the UMCs. GREAT!! Perfect harmony and even when there were a few “mis-strums/notes” nobody either noticed or cared. “Mick’s” female singers brought talent, perfect harmony and just the right amount of sexual “tension” to the stage to add to the wonderful hour of entertainment. Crowd asked for an encore and were granted “ONE MORE SONG”! RTS showed everybody why they deserved the #1 slot.

A half hour later, MOR took the stage and whomped up the metal as only MOR can do in their own style!! WOW! Ron came out, hit the high notes with perfection and sustained those high notes and energy through what was an even faster hour than the previous hour with RTS. Such perfection and wonderful musicianship to witness amongst this band! Watching and listening to Sergio shred on his guitar was awesome and then when Gavin and Sergio stand side-by-side and play beautifully in such great harmony is truely a gift from MOR to the audience. Watching Tom bang away on those skins for so long tired me out! And watching Dave help keep the beat on bass with a smile on his face throughout the entire set showed me that he, as well as the rest of the band were happy to be there. Toward the end of the set, Ron kept going behind the wings during songs and during transistions. I kept waiting to see what he was going bring out! Pitch forks? Eddie? Nope… nothing! Why are you teasing us Ron??? Finally Ron says he forgot something, goes off one more time and brings out our favorite…EDDIE!! Great! Hey Ron… who was Eddie this time???

MOR showed class and respect for the other bands of the evening by acknowledging RTS and 619. Acknowledged the people sitting and cheering upstairs as well as those sitting downstairs and those on the dance floor. You knew who has made you be #2 in the UMC and you came and thanked them with a performance that was superb! And thanks for also granting the encore.

One thing I noticed was the ever increasing volume level throughout the first two performances. By the time MOR was finishing up their set, I was getting ready to reach for the earplugs.

Another quick half hour went by and 6one9 took the stage. The start of their set was so loud!! We stayed for a couple of songs but had to leave early, not because of the sound, but due to the evening getting late and having to get up early for a meeting this morning. I hate it when work interferes with my life!! :-) So sorry 619 for having to leave early. I liked what I heard before I left and I’m sure you guys entertained the crowd with your usual good talents.

In closing, I’d like to say once again what a talented lighting crew Viejas has! Hey!!! Viejas top dude guys!!! Compensate your tech crew well! They are awesome and show creative expertise in what they do!! It is clear that they want the best lighting environment for your bands and DELIVER IT! They punch the lights on cue, subdue the lighting when the song and ambiance is needed and explode the stage lights as well as lighting the audience at just the right moment to add to the overall show. Great job!!

Kudos also to the great job the service people do trying to get out the drinks to all the people, and to the security guys trying to keep the crowd in line.

It was the best evening so far since the finals and that is coming from a person who isn’t necessarily a big metal/hard rock fan! But MOR…..you’ve taught me to appreciate the metal sound!

Speaking of genres…. my favorite genre Country, is going to start it’s own “Cover Band Competition” next month on August 9th. It will run four nights (August 9, 16, 23 and 30) with the finals on September 6th. 30 minute sets with 3 interactive judges. Ed… might one of those judges be you???? Top prize is $10,000!

One more evening, next week for our UMC best of the best bands. Hope to see you all there!!
    ~~Peace

  102. Oh! I forgot to ask… Ed! Where were you last night? I thought for sure I’d see you there!

  103. Yeah, sorry about missing last night. Things have been pretty crazy around here and Saturday was a hectic day with us having a going away bbq and party for one of our tenants in the afternoon, then going to see my friend’s new Ramone’s Tribute band play at O’Connell’s. They’re called Hey Ho, Let’s Go and they’re actually quite good.

So, the Big Country Showdown (BCS) is exactly what Colleen said it was. A shorter, country version of UMC. It goes for 5 weeks, starting on Aug. 9. And yes, Colleen, I am one of the judges. The other three are To be determined.

BCS is a LOT of fun. Last year was the first year we did it and we had about as many people come out as the first year of UMC. I imagine, this year of BCS will be like last year of UMC – which is cool

and yes, there will be a blog (me) and yes there will be an adjustment to the audience applause category and yes, we are instituting some new and exciting things that are also going to be instituted into next year’s UMC. I’ll let you know when I get the permission to blog it.

So, there you have it peeps. Big Country Showdown. I’ll be there. I know Colleen’l be there. Now you be there too!

    The Sheriff has Spoken!

    • “The other three”? So there will be four judges counting you? Or is it just too early in the AM to count? :-)

“The Sheriff”? I know a LOT of deputy sheriffs…you their new boss???

      • Sorry, three total judges. And yes, The Sheriff – to comply with the country motif

  104. Thanks Colleen for the commentary–It almost felt like I WAS there!! You’re NOT a heavy metal fan, but you MUST be a huge MoR fan, right?:) Glad you had fun.! I will see you next Sunday!! Oh, and thanks for the info on the country band thing!

  105. Yes, Renee… you called me out! I am a big MOR supporter and fan! Those guys have SO much talent! They come across on stage as these hard a$$ guys, but when you get to know them, they are very nice guys! But shhhhhh don’t tell anyone!! :-) Actually most of the metal/hard rock guys I’ve met (Bruce/”Alice”, Mark/”Big Toe”, etc.) are usually nice, supportive of each other musicians! Which reminds me…I saw “Alice” there last night too!
    ~~Peace

  106. Yes, they all are nice guys, and amazing supporters of each other!! Who was “Eddie” last night? Phil (from ACG)? I wonder if “Alice” was there looking for the guitar player he needed to have replaced…? :)

  107. “Colleen” you Expressed Last Nights Performances Perfect!
It Was Cool that Viejas Invited “These Great Artists” Back.
It is so Nice to See Your Favorite Bands On A Big Stage,
With Pro Sound Gear, and Lighting. The Dance Floor Is Also A Plus!
Its always Great to Play a Show in a Nice Club, and for The Fans
its Even Better. I hope Viejas brings these Talented Groups Back
No one wants to have to wait until next years UMC to experience
“The Shows” Viejas can put on with All Their Local Talent..

  108. The last of the best of the best tonight.
All good things must come to an end…
    ~~Peace

  109. shut up colleen, i bet one of my ‘boys’ you are the kind ow woman who HAS to have the last word, guaranteed.

    • No “Al” The Last Word is On Me.
“Colleen” See Ya Back Here Next Year, I’ll Miss Ya!
“Al” Hope I Don’t See Ya Back Here Next Year[or Ever!] Won’t Miss Ya!

  110. I never quit see ya ‘bi!*h”, ooops, I mean “chick”

  111. Al, you are annoying! Colleen, nice seeing ya again–will see you at the Country Showdown, right?? The UMC was great fun, and I can’t wait til next year!! Thanks everyone!!

  112. Renee, if you spot it, you got it, you, the chick and colleen should get a room, and 3 bullets.

  113. ok..then we’ll be waitinn’ for ya!!

  114. Chick and Renee! Sorry I’ve been gone for awhile. Thanks for the kind words and I’m sorry I haven’t been here to give “Al” a target. You both are very kind women who don’t deserve venom being sprayed at you.

As for me? I’ve grown weary of “Al”’s words. S/He requested/ordered me to “shut up”. Towards “Al” I will do that. Towards anybody else who wishes to hold meaningful conversations/debates, I’m more than willing to share.

Yes, Renee the UMC has been fun. Not quite as much “drama” as last year, but in some ways that’s good. Most of the blog conversations this year were nicer and more professional from a musician’s point of view. Some of the major participants from the UMC 2’s blog have not been as vocal this year, but they’ve been replaced with others such as you, Tom, Dave M, Evette, etc. Still waiting to hear from the Lovely Mary however. :-)

Chick… you were a bit late in returning to the blog this year, but I’m glad you did return. I’ve enjoyed your company.

Ed, my general, my king, my sheriff… it’s been a blast again this year. That subject of which I am no longer speaking may reincarnate in the next contest…. but it is rather a dead topic!!

David… hope you liked the “peace” offering I gave you. I’m not conceding to what you believe, just trying to find a middle ground. See you around town. BTW congratulations on being nominated for the SDMA! See ya on the PCT!

To all the bands who performed for the UMC 3…. awesome job all! You have all certainly raised the bar for next year! Looking forward to seeing MOR take 1st next year!

To all the bloggers (even you Al) for the UMC 3… thanks for offering your opinion, knowledge and insight to this wonderful world of music. Hope to see you all next year or sooner at the BCS!

    ~~Peace (ya’ll)

  115. Goodbye for now Colleen–see ya in a couple weeks!!

  116. Ohhhhh, I almost forgot—-BYE AL!! will miss ya!! :)

  117. you girls are as dumb as a box of rocks, i don’t miss any of you. if y’all had brains you’d be dangerous. it is apparant that Colleen has no life, especially from the overabundance of co-dependant butt-kissing. sad, but true. you ladies are prime examples of geeks who do not know they are geeks. pathetic. try to be a bit more interesting than the ‘you are a poopy-butt’ level of comments, or the i’m a nun,and i’m better than you BS. meaningful? you think that means syrupy, get a clue!

  118. OK, Al, I guess I am wrong– how can we miss you when YOU WON’T GO AWAY!!?? And WHO said anything about being ‘poopy butts’ or ‘nuns’?? I think you have too much time on your hands to be reading unspoken words into things, and then commenting on them!

  119. just can’t figure out the cryptic can you? stop flaunting your ignorance, the more you write, the more you prove my point(s). shut the hell up and go away renee.

  120. You’re wasting my time.. I’m done…find someone else to spew your nastiness to (that is, IF you can!!)…….yuck!!!!!!!

    • Renee — ditto!
Too bad one person can take away pleasure from what used to be a fun place to exchange opinions. However… as much as I’ve become weary of “Al’s” comments and no longer wish to comment on them, I still understand “Al” and actually feel sorry for “Al”.

But… “Al” is only a tiny bit of this blog, and I’ve found very interesting people with whom to communicate… Patti, Chick, Dave M., Evette, Tom, Bruce, David N., Shaaron, D. Patrone, Keith, chile, Angie, Phil, Rick, Renee, Sergio, Star, and many, many others.

      ~~Peace

  121. what’s that noise?? it sounds like a baby crying! waaaaaaaaaaaa. waaaaaaaaaaaaa. waaaaaaaaaaaa!

  122. Colleen– how does the BCS thing work? Is this going to be the place to blog? Wouldn’t want to miss out!! Michael’s band is entered. They play Aug.16th.. Be there, ok? I will!

  123. Collen, Renee, bloggers – the BCS Blog will be at it’s own location. I will pop in here when it’s ready, which should be sometime tomorrow, probably night.

    Start spreading the news!

    BCS is almost here.

  124. Hey Colleen,
Vito and I will be there on the 8th. My bassist bud is playing.
    Maybe will see you? ;)

  125. Correction, I mean see you on the 9th.
Be at House of Blues on the 8th!

  126. Ed… thanks for answering Renee’s question. The BCS blog is apparently “awaiting moderation”. :-)
Renee… What is Michael’s band’s name? I should be there barring any unforeseen circumstance. (Who is Michael?)
Rick… I will be happy to see you! I’ve missed you and Vito. What’s your bud’s band’s name? What’s happening @ the HoB on the 8th?
    ~~Peace ya’ll!
